Just did a quick visit at a client ...

Drove along Jan Smuts Avenue, onto Empire to Auckland park ...

16 Access points
3 completely open
1 public internet access

This was off a low power IPAQ ... time to do a decent wardrive ;-) ...

We could almost get a mesh going just by looking for overlapping company APs ;-) (well, not quite)

<br />starting to sound VERY interesting indeed!

i'm getting a wireless network, whether that's enough to get me on JaWug, it another question. Getting 802.11g stuff too... *droool*

tower82.randparkridge.jhb|13-21% signal|256k package, running at 0.3 - 3k/s :(</div id="right"></i></font id="size1">

I'm getting a 802.11g AP soon too, so I will be searching for Capetonians to connect too. My main interest is sharing ADSL and MW service over a wifi network. ADSL + MW (when its sorted) together would be an ideal combination but too expensive for most to have induvidually.

Prior to ADSL capping, latency sensitive stuff can go over ADSL and downloads via MW. After ADSL cap, local ADSL bw can be raped while using MW for int access.

Of course we have the moutain so I dont have to hurry while still looking cool to my fellow forumites [}:)]

I useually only go up when I feel the need to partake in the devine leaf but come to think of it one or two MW / Iburst towers on table mountain (cableway station) would be more than a good idea [}:)][}:)][}:)]

I have a feeling 800m is a bit easier said than done

Sounds good to me to... I'm actually in a area where I don't think there is any one who would like to do something like that. I'm in Villeria in Pretoria! To far from greedy... Anybody in that area???

I'm up on the hill above Silverton. Look for the Groenie node at http://www.nodedb.com/africa/za/pretoria/?

Maybe we can get someone in between us, and link up to the guys in Hatfield.

800m is nothing.
You can easily get 2+kms from a pair of 12dBi Yagi's if you have line of sight.

Miro has them for abour R390 each.
You'll need some LMR-400 cable to connect the Yagi to where the Access Point/Wireless Card is, which is R26p/metre. (A set of connectors is about R200.
And then you'll need a short piece of cable to connect the LMR-400 to the Access Point, which is around R120 (depending on connectors).

Its not dirt cheap, but just think, you'll never have to pay to communicate between the two points again.
