Guys,

Have a look at www.miro.co.za I've had good service from them and they have a good variety of Senao gear and antennas

I'm also in the weltevreden area and wouldn't mind having summin like that setup, when u get the bucks together noone, gimme a shout.

Miro are pretty damn good, their prices are very appealing and the Senao equipment is decent, quite powerful from what i've seen.

while we are at it.. try www.cyberdyne.co.za - they have (well they are getting) the MSI range. These are quite cheap and are very well supported (check the support pages at www.msi.com.tw) and the antenna can be replaced with a decent antenna. The 802.11g PCI card is only R435. The downside I guess is that they only go upto 17dBm output power but they are spec'd as 450m outdoors.

still no clarification on the details of the mesh network??

Sliver, follow the instructions daffy gave earlier on this thread (maybe cept for the part of registering on his site? You can if you want, dont see the need though... anyway)

On www.nodedb.com you'd be able to enter longitude and latitude which would give me quite a cool idea where you are at (just call the node you add 'Sliver' and i'll be able to know it's you)

I'm currently looking to see who would be interested in something like this before I budget for this. Would be very sweet to get a group of people together... dunno what we're gonna do, but would be cool :)

Otherwise, if you're interested, you can mail me at friendz at acidrazor dot com with your address so I can see if you'd be able to get line of sight and if you're in range (street name would do if you're paranoid)

That way I can also see if there's any interest [:)]

I'm tired, thank god tomorrow is friday....

Help save the bandwidth. Decent download speeds for TheRodent! Stop downloading now!!!

btw, I had this idea of pooling our sentech/adsl connections and do some bandwidth loading between the wifi users, that way you pay for your internet connection, but kinda share it with others as well (who also has internet connections etc)

if one link goes down, theoretically you'd be able to still get connectivity... we could even setup an adsl to route only local traffic and game successfully via that (as suggested by daffy re: pvt emails)

yea... checkit... klas vakie kom my haal, ciao

Greedy where exactly are you? I'm near the men's hostels ... I don't have an AP yet, but if all goes well I'll have one soon. So I spoke to this guy today who told me he has some clients who set up this link to some country up in Africa. What they basically do is they bounce the signal off some inner part of the atmosphere. I'll have to do some research on this. He said the equipment cost round about 2k. Maybe some of you guys know about this?

Im right at the varsity. In hatfield very close to the square/mall in burnett street. It all depends on the range. If we can get above 800 or so metres we should be cool

This sounds like an interesting diversion. I would be extremely keen to get on board. The investment doesn't sound like all that much at all. I am in the randparkridge area (Sentech Tower 82). Anyone have any idea how I can get my co-ords for nodedb without actually having a GPS? Really would like to know if there is a node in range.

I used the sentech zone locator, hover the mouse over your house, and the bottom right shows your GPS co-ords.

By the responses it looks like the JAWUG community is going to get quite a boost.

Ok done it. Things look pretty cool. There are two little green flags within 5km of me, three blue ones and a a bunch more red ones. If some of the little red flag thingies come online I can trace a route all the way to the RoDent!

Think I better start contacting people and gathering equipment before my wife asks what it's for.

Daffy, who can I talk to about what I exactly need, what to buy etc. I have seen the stuff on your site, but I think I could do with a little more solid advice etc.

With all the interest being shown in JAWUG, perhaps it may be cool to get some sort of forums on the site to help prospective users with FAQs, setup etc.

Hehe, I bet Sentech is loving Daffy at the moment, he's shifted some of the focus away from them.

I'm looking at setting up a Wiki, but I dont want to host it on my ADSL Line at home.
Is there anyone willing to donate hosting?

For those of you who are looking for advice, please email admin@jawug.za.net

I have a mate in PMB who has set-up a wireless group in and around the town. All we need to find are some guys who are willing to set-up some nodes along the way, and we can have a JHB vs PMB Unreal Deathmatch.

Telkom who?
