Messaging apps killing SMS revenue

Standard SMS is obsolete... its the evolution. How many Billions have been lost on landlines to Cellular? The cellular companies will need to adjust accordingly.
 
Just like wordprocessors replaced typewriters. The march of progress continues and at a faster pace
 
They will have lost so much because sms is so overcharged for ... consider the prices of sending only 120 characters
 
they made up to R6.5k per gb with sms's but get only R89 - R200 per gb for data. if i owned a cellphone company i would have cried!

adapt or die!
 
yea well paying 70c for a SMS is a RIP off so kinda glad this happened
 
Wonder whats preventing Whatsapp integrating a VoIP component?

That's all that's missing from the puzzle.

Wonder how popular Viber is now? Time to reload it and see who in my contacts list is using it.

EDIT: 52 contacts on Viber vs 283 on Whatsapp and therein lies the rub.

What did they expect? The cellphone companies have been gouging customers for years.
 
I love the way they talk about "losses" as if it's money they were entitled to but has now been lost. No, you haven't "lost" a thing! (Except maybe the ability to rip people off quite so easily)
 
If the service providers charged a reasonable rate for a sms, like 10c, they would make a crapload of money.

But they are all just too greedy, hell, Vodacom even has an OOB rate for a sms - 80c!!! It's simply disgusting and there's is NO way in hell that they can defend the OOB rate, nevermind the 50c per sms.

The funny thing is....most old people and people with greyscale display Nokias still use sms. So you would have thought that the service providers would see them as poor people and lower the pricing to show their ubuntu. But do they?
 
Kind of expected given the exorbitant prices they've been charging for sms. Charge a fair rate for the few bits of info carried over the network and suddenly all the IM apps become redundant.

Exactly!!

That's why I'm still convinced that all the marketing people at Vodacom are morons.
 
SMS is not dead, operators just need to lower their prices.
