There are little people that understand our love of metal, being speed, symphonic, dark, etc.
It is a acquired taste, not many understand or see how good it is, Just try and explain for instance, Slayer, Nightwish, Cradle, Avintasia, Ace, etc to your work mates. They just don't or would not understand the beauty of metal. I would rather do my Mech. Eng (meaning I am a Mechanical Engineer). Work Listening to Metal than anything else.
But it seems any fan of Metal are placed as a Antichrist in the general work space.
That is not true, we just like fast paced music with great musical skill, extreme vocals and loud instruments.
(the screaming makes sense to us)
I am just tired of the labels given to Metal fans

Stop worrying about labels. Be greatfull you don't have to listen to their kark music.

Child metalheads. Get them while they're young!

Think that's bad? Just imagine being atheist, listening to melodic death metal daily and saying no to prayer meetings. I think I might have scared some people at my old work :p

I'm Christian and listen to extreme metal. Try that for a shocker.

...well, I'm more into power-prog metal the past couple of years. Symphony X, Evergrey, Myrath and DGM being some of my favourites.

Prayer meetings at work? :confused::sick:

It's just that a lot of metalheads are so damn binary about it: It's either metal or nothing & they regard other music styles as their nemesis. But maybe that's mostly the high-school variety of metalhead I've encountered.

Mhm, most of the people I know that like metal listen to all sorts of music.

I like metal, the drummer usually makes/breaks it for me in that genre.

whats your idea of all sorts of music, do they listen to house or dubstep?

I call BS. Heard of more metalheads that will also listen to classical music than any other genre. We only listen to the good stuff. I can listen to most, but R&B/Hip-Hop is my limit.

so Nina Simone and Madvillian are off limits for you?

Don't explain anything to anyone.

That's the best way to go about it.

That and not giving a damn what other people think.

I started with GnR in primary school, which led to Metallica, then Slayer, then Morbid Angel, but it all went a bit mental in high school when I borrowed a friend's older brother's mix tape. And so I was introduced to Dark Funeral, Dimmu and CoF. And the furious search for more music continued! No internet back then, and unless you knew someone at Musica (or Rebel Music, our local), you had to scrounge around to borrow CD's or tapes. We had a few metal heads in the Helderberg and we were like some sort of strange family - in fact, metal heads are like that around the world. We're the only subculture that is, and it's awesome. Go anywhere, and you can strike up a conversation with a random metal head. "Nice shirt! Have you heard the new..." I have like one band shirt left (Amorphis), and looking to expand my collection now that they're easier to get because I live in Blighty. But I don't wear full on battle gear anymore - I stopped years ago in SA. It's just too ****ing hot to wear black all the time! I just dress for comfort now.

Anyway, had a period after school where I thought I'd try being "normal". Didn't work out too well, but I found that other genres of music aren't all that bad *dodges*. I eventually got back into the metal, and still am - but because I had such a large gap, I find that I still prefer the metal from the 80's and 90's - it's a challenge actually catching up, because metal never slowed down! I still listen to a lot of 80's music (Depeche Mode, A-Ha, Duran Duran, etc) - can thank my parents for that!

Sure, people look at me strangely when they find out what I listen to, but I just grin - I don't expect them to "get it" like I do. We're different, anyway - we can actually "understand" the music. Except maybe Meshuggah - the polyrhythms still do my head in.

But it does seem to put us on the back foot when interacting with "normal" people. Usual comments like "don't you guys kill cats and eat babies?" and more ignorant ****. #notallmetalheads.
