Metal Head Rant.....

You think being a metalhead's bad? Try explaining Anamanaguchi and J-pop to friends and family.

I listen to more melodic/opera metal, so its a bit easier to deal with. The GF's mom loves it but agrees with me that even though the lyrics mean very well, the perceived aggression might tip people over.

Having said that, I have gotten a few people into metal, so I guess it all depends on who you trying to explain it to.

Speaking of, I cant find a good metal pub/club in JHB north thats having an event on the last weekend of september :(

The new Kamelot is also good

so Nina Simone and Madvillian are off limits for you?

Nina Simone did not just do R&B. Go look at her bio, she was all over the place. Classical, Jazz, Blues, Folk I can appreciate. R&B not so much, although there will be exceptions. The other one I've never heard of, but as he is only listed as Hip Hop, I doubt I will be able to appreciate him for what he is.

way way back I used to try and fit in.
I had Backstreet boys CD's (cringe) and Britney Spears, but that was for the album cover...

then when I was about 11 or 12 I saw Nirvana unplugged in new York on MTV and my life changed. I fell in love instantly. from there I went though all the usual stuff, all the things other people did not bother listening too. this weirdly included eminem, Dre, Snoop, DMX, Jay-Z, Nas and all sorts of different music.
I moved from linkin Park on to Static X and disturbed, System of a Down, Manson, Rammstein and then one day in about 2003 someone played me only for the Week.

here I am 12 years later. I have a Jesterhead tattooed on my chest, I still listen to in flames every day. I can still respect a decent rapper, I can enjoy Nightwish, and I can enjoy Andrew Lloyed Webber, or Beethoven.

Most of the metal heads I know have their own sub genre that they love, be it hair metal, pirate metal, speed metal, death metal, nu metal, scremo, melodic death, opera, Viking, Folk or what ever works for them.
and then also appritiates music in completely different genre's.

I had the fortune of being in Pretoria when Zeplins was still open, and I made a lot of friends, so we all traded music, and talked about it. and now 10 years later we still do, I still find new bands and share them with friends, or they find new bands and share them with me.

forget boxes. if you want new things to listen to, find a random playlist with one of the songs you enjoy on any one of the internet streaming sites, and go crazy.

and allways remember

I like Metal. Well the creative Metal bands at least and not the ten thousand bands who try to sound like cradle.

Metal has become pretty mainstream since the 1980's and with the convergence of pop and edm in the 2000 it seemed to become a breed of music that just is and always will be there.

This caused the rise of the new metalhead. The type which is metal or gtfo. The type that never likes a new album or subgenre like nu metal or whatnot. The type who's originality is stuck at the tightest snare and the growliest vocals. The type who challanges your metal taste with theirs. You know.... "That's not true metal, this is."

Yeah those metalheads are the essence of uncreative, unoriginal and douchbagery.

so you have been to the metal thread on myBB then?
the amount of aruments that were had there over is this metal or not metal is kinda silly.
and 90% of the music in that thread is simply not for me. and I consider myself a metalhead. I probibly have longer hair than most of the people who post there, and I most likely headbang more than they do (how else do you dry your hair?)

Those arguments are not strong - they are what keep the entire genre of metal alive. imho.

Think I posted there before but didn't really read arguments. Also I don't have hair but still headbang. XD

its all fine and dandy if you are having that argument over say Heidenvolk vs soilwork. because people suggesting that are not new to the scene, and they all know how it works, and its kinda like play fighting between siblings.

but always remember, linkin Park, Slipknot, Manson, Deftones ect might not be metal in some people's opinion, but they are the path to metal for all of us. we all started somewhere, and for the people around today, those bands most likely lead them to the metal thread. but then people get all criticised for posting it, way beyond what the guy posting say, alestorm got criticised, and alestorm have a freaking hurdie gurdie...

I like metal, but I'm not a metal-head.

I listen to a fair range of music, and am as likely to be listening to EDM as I am to be listening to death metal.

It must be said though, that I get the majority of negative comments directed at the heavier stuff I listen to.

I do feel that judging people's taste in music is the mark of a weak mind...
