Seems some fragments might have made it to the ground.

A meteorite has flared spectacularly in the sky and exploded over the Russian region of Chelyabinsk, reportedly injuring around 100 people.

Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.

Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions. Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6,000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers, local newspaper Znak reports quoting a source in the military.

Wow, just wow. If this is true .. then I am even more in awe of the Russians than I should be!

I think this is just the media going for a sensationalist angle. I HIGHLY doubt that they even had a chance to aim at it, let alone have much of a chance to hit it at all. It would be traveling far too fast. The Russian government itself hasn't said anything about firing any missises. So I'll take that 'unconfirmed report' with a bag of salt, heck a whole sea's worth of salt.

I'd take the reports of the meteor being blown apart by missile with a Siberia-sized pinch of salt.

Agreed, it seemed to disintegrate just as it flared to seriously intense heat. More than likely it was spontaneous combustion from the forces and heat etc.... Does look like it must have been a pretty big one though. Probably would have made a decent dent if it hadn't disintegrated.

In order to shoot this thing down at that kind of speed, they would have had to fire a non heat seeking missile straight up its nose. Any angle would have failed due to speeds and tracking Algorithms. I dont doubt that it is possible with a lot of forewarning to set up enough missiles in a net over a couple hundred square Kilometers to ensure a good hit, but we would have seen many missiles shot to ensure that it hit, as It is, I am struggling to see a single one of them.

Too much coincidence that it "Explodes" just as it burns intensely. The Russian Gvmnt would have found out about this thing about 5 minutes after it exploded, and shat themselves.

According to reports it's estimated to have been around 1m in size, but I'm sure things will be more accurate later on.

Ya I was thinking maybe the size of a small car or so. Depending on the makeup of the meteor, there is a sort of size threshold that dictates whether it will explode, or whether it will maintain integrity. More frozen water or anything like that will result in it boiling and expanding. So it can be bigger and still explode. More rock, and it will need to be much smaller in order for it to explode before hitting.
I suspect that it had a decent amount of water on from the explosion, which is why I would put my money on a hatchback sized rock.

All guesses for now, and I am not even sure they will be able to accurately guess it if they didn't have a proper camera on it, or a satellite snapping a pic on the way past

Doubt it was intercepted. Why would they have anti missile defences in that area if indeed they could intercept a meteor.
