Meteor over Russia

Scary how much devastation a meteor the size of a car in a sparsely populated area can do.
 
This video shows the stunning delay between the meteor streaking through the sky and the booms being heard/felt. You can clearly see that there were multiple booms. FFW to 04:30 for the meteor and 06:55 for the sound.

NASA says 15m and 7000 tons before it entered our atmosphere... This is their preliminary estimate and slightly bigger than a car.
 
What's really scary is that objects this size are seen as too small to currently bother tracking. All the current NEO surveys are focused on objects much larger than this one.

Do you notice the peculiar oddities in the video :

Driver of the vehicle drives into parking area, around parking area and then gets out to move a plank so as to park facing down the line of parked cars.
Gets out and leaves camera running.
Black SUV pulls in at 5.30 , occupant stays in vehicle until after the sound, which is rather impressive, then casually exits and strolls around vehicle.
Obviously locals are pretty used to load bangs in the sky in that area.

Yes, it's pretty weird. Then again, the reason the whole thing was so spectaculary captures is since everyone drives around with dash cameras due to prevent a)officials asking for bribes, b)act as proof when being assaulted due to road rage, c)for insurance purposes since it seems the courts and insurance companies only accept video proof.

The path was basically East to West, if the meteorite had come down just slightly earlier, the repercussions could have been far worse, because about 80 -100km East lies the Shchuch'ye Chemical Weapons Destruction Facility covering almost 500 Acres of land, where there is a rather large stockpile of chemical weapons for destruction.

80 km away in roughly the other direction lies Mayak , a nuclear weapons storage and disposal area.
The Mayak facility is not well known for safety.

In 1957, Mayak was the site of one of the worst nuclear accidents in history when the explosion of a poorly maintained storage tank released 50-100 tonnes of high-level radioactive waste.
The event was eventually rated at 6 on the seven-level INES scale, third in severity only to the disasters at Chernobyl in the Ukraine and Fukushima in Japan.

Imagine a lake so polluted and contaminated that spending just an hour on its shores would result in certain death, and the only way seen fit to deal with it is to fill the entire water body with concrete blocks to keep the toxic soil underneath from moving onshore

Slightly earlier or a little to the right, and this could very well have turned out to be a slightly larger "event".

Big difference between an ICBM fired from known launch sites and a random entry at 40000 mph of a small dark space rock.
