Johannesburg - Protesting metro police officers fired live ammunition at SA Police Service members in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

SAPS Gauteng police spokesperson Eugene Opperman said the police had been forced to fire rubber bullets at metro police members who had blockaded the city, causing a traffic gridlock.

Seven metro police officers - three women and four men - were injured during the police action, Opperman said.

The exchange occurred in the Eloff Street / M2 freeway area.

The South African Municipal Workers Union protests were triggered by complaints over salaries and nepotism. Strikers said they would not return to work until their grievances had been addressed.

Major roads and freeways were blocked, causing traffic havoc.

Just came out of the CBD, complete chaos with Metro "protesting wage disputes".

Metro has gridlocked the CBD and blocked access to the M2 (and M1 I believe).

Well I wouldn't quite call it a civil war ... but apparently SAPS and Metro are shooting at each other with rubber bullets ... and I also heard that they block access to M2. Apparently traffic is backed up to M1 ... boy do we live in a Banana Republic :p

This is pathetic even by S.A standards

Time for a cash in transit heist anyone??

Funny enough I heard something on the radio about a CiT Van being stoned, caught the end of it but they were talking about the Metro situation. Really hope it was not metro attacking one of those vans.

A news report on 567 says the action will continue tomorrow morning - with Metro advising that if they are fired upon with rubber bullets, they will reply with live ammunition.

These are the people we pay to uphold the law.

Alice in Wonderland was less weird.

And apparently Metro were threatening citizens as well who were furious about being gridlocked for hours in the same position.

so why should we ever obey these Metro traffic cops ever again? If those who are entrusted with the law cannot obey that same law, then why should they be obeyed? I am not talking about anything deliberate, but if one of these okes steps out in front of my vehicle for a "routine traffic stop" he better hope his bones are made out of rubber.

And that was the flowing traffic. What you cant tell from that photo is that just a little further up, the M2 is even worse, the road is blocked and not a singe car is moving an inch - people were standing outside their cars having a chat. My mate left work at 5:30pm (ABSA CBD) and he only just got home to Parktown about half an hour ago. Disgraceful...

don't these stupid phukkers realise what an impact they have on the reputation of our country from an international perspective. UNacceptable no matter what their grievances are.

Now we just need the ANCYL prez to give live commentary on the battle and Eskom to switch off the street lights...then I'm in the body armour/undertaker business asap.:(

On a more positive note, I saw a Scorpions car cruising my neighborhood today. Glad to see that they are still hanging on.

Utterly rediculous ... and they're killing each other ... for shame.
I added a news article about this in the 1st post.

OMG. That is rather scary. I'm glad they had the decency not to return fire with live rounds....that would have resulted in a full-blown war. Plus this way they can pile the blame on the metro guys.
