Metrofibre Experience and Pricing

If you had to choose between Rain 5G and MFN~Cool Ideas for gaming, which would you choose
I just moved from Rain to MFN and while fibre is not bad I haven't noticed a difference to justify the extra money I am paying. I will give it a few months and then I will move back to rain.

The speeds seem stable & full 99% of the time.

I will look into Rocketnet - what are their local latencies like?

MFN it is around 2ms to 21ms.
Hi @lllDevin564lll

We would love to welcome you to RocketNet in the future, if you would like to see how our network is, then please access our looking glass below: https://lg.as327849.net/. We have just reviewed our Metrofibre pricing in January 2021 and the pricing will remain until the next annual review in Feb 2022.

That is extremely unfortunate news that the price is static till Feb 2022

Does anybody know roughly how long the testing phase lasts for MFN after the rollout just before the area officially goes live? I assume it probably varies quite a bit depending on what issues they may run into, but I'd just like to have a rough idea of how long this process typically lasts. Thanks.

About 5 months from when they started trenching in my area to when they went live... Aug 2020 - end Jan 2021.

Thanks for the response. Do you think most of the 5 months was spent trenching or did it seem like they had been finished with trenching for a while before it actually went live? I am just growing more and more antsy waiting for our area to go live as it feels like the trenching phase is being dragged out. I feel sure that they are at least 95% done with the trenching but I just have no idea whether I should be expecting weeks or months from now before we are finally connected.

They were done with trenching within a month or two and then dropped off the face of the earth. I had to keep asking for an ETA on their go live date and was eventually told it would be at the end of Jan 2021... in Dec I placed a pre-order with my ISP and then had to ask a couple more times during Jan to get someone to install the line and activate the service. I had actually seen their coverage map reflected the area was live a few weeks before the promised date.

Its a difficult one. I see many people experiencing issues with RAIN's network, but then I also hear alot of praise from others.

Try MFN with Cool ideas as ISP and see how that goes. I am also jumping ship from MFN as my ISP to Supersonic but Supersonic still uses the MFN backbone.

My issue with MFN as my ISP is that they are very expensive and their support is non existent. Currently paying R1250 for 50/50 but moving over to Supersonic ill get 200/100 for around R1100.
The premium is probably worth the existence of service. Be wary of Supersonic.

Hi @Dee96 , many people see that in a positive light. A month-to-month contract is well...month to month, so our Fibre Network Operators can at any given time provide us with notice of pending price adjustments. By cementing our pricing till Feb 2022 you will experience price stability on our network. This pricing is, in essence the same as our 2020 pricing. We take the risk that if the FNO raises prices then we can't touch the prices until Feb 2022, as per our commitment to our customers.

You warned me and i didn't listen. I had to send the CEO of Supersonic a message via LinkedIn this morning asking for help. 33 days after doing an application they came back to me saying they are not sure if there is coverage in my area (Which their site is showing) but they will get back to me COB today.

I swear dealing with these guys are worse than dealing with the Post office. No one has a clue, makes promises that they cant keep.

anyway, lets give them 1 more chance, if nothing positive happens ill start a new thread

I understand but if you look at the other side of the coin, there is also the possibility of decreases.
Given whats happening in the wider environment (Openserve), it is probable

Well the fun and games have begun....
We've moved in to our new place, and we are working from home, with no internet.
Placed the order with Cool Ideas and paid the activation fee almost a month ago, moved in over the weekend and immediately sent them the installed ONT FSAN number to activate the line.
Metrofibre is now holding us hostage because the previous tenants did not put in a cancellation for their line. Long story short, Cool Ideas cant place our order because Metrofibre refuses to release the line. And the person who is supposed to be sorting this out is never available to speak to.

Always lots of BS when it comes to this stuff. I just did a move from one ISP to another and despite me putting in cancellation notice more then 1 month advance, contact both old and new ISP more then 1 month in advance to line them up to do the switch come the 1st of the month, it still took about a week to swap.

Your situation is even worse, from one customer to another, and the previous guy didn't cancel. I wish you well through this process. ISPA really need to think about how to help a consumer with these issues. Best case scenario to get help is contact the forum reps to move things.

Do you have your ref for me?

Thanks PBCool, your connect team has been doing everything they can. We managed to get hold of the previous tenants and apparently they did put in a cancellation. Vodacom (their ISP) and MFN seem to be the problematic ones here.

Managed to get hold of someone at MFN who made the wheel turn. We're now connected.
Great in future feel free to escalate via the Cool Ideas thread or myself.
