Which ISP are you using on the MFN Network?

My ping is fine to cape town, strange yours isn't which server in Cape Town?
 
It's now also normal again. :unsure: I'll try this ping plotter thing tomorrow night if it's high again. Strange that it doubled for a couple of hours.
 
For anyone that's on a strict budget for internet speed access. Metrofibre also has the 40 Mbps speed line available at R499.00. Its currently on promotion. Its not advertised on their website.
They also have a 20Mbps for R399 a month if you want extreme budget
 
Anyone here had issues where connecting to Afrihost/MFN via router gives no throughput, but connecting PC directly to ONT works? Did you manage to get it resolved?

My connection has been doing this since Tuesday morning, and Afrihost techs have me do multiple router resets and reboots to no avail. Currently running my home on my LTE router.

On Tuesday afternoon one of the techs suggested I enter the MAC address of my Afrihost-supplied AX3 router manually. This resulted in 30 minutes of connectivity before the whole thing started again.

The Afrihost support staff have been pretty useless - lots of broken promises to phone back as well - so I'm asking for some advice here.

I signed up in March for the 1 Gbps package and have never got close to my speed either. The fiber support team has just been asking me for screenshots of my speed test results for the last 4 weeks and "escalating" the issue to MFN, but I just went from having poor connectivity to no connectivity whatsoever.

Can't believe the time I've wasted being kept on hold and then told to reboot or reset the router.

This has been the worst experience I had with an ISP since my Telkom ADSL days.
 
Line has been activated. When I run a continous ping I get this:

The line is unusable in this state, it does not remain active long enough to even do a speed test.

After 4 weeks with sub-par connectivity and then one week with no connectivity I have decided to call it quits and cancelled. I am very disappointed with the poor support and lack of feedback.

Switched back to my old 500Mbps Openserve connection and everything just works.

Seems that MFN om Afrihost is OK is there are no issues, but the wheels really come off if they have to fix anything.

This experience has left me with a bad taste in my mouth, not sure who is to blame here - Afrihost or MFN - but this is untenable when I'm running my entire house off the connection.

This is an issue that is going to take some time to resolve. It affects a number of OLTs in Centurion and PTA East. We suspect it's an issue with the mpls backhaul of these nodes and it's not something that can just be changed as it will affect a number of clients on all ISPs

My own line shows similar speeds on a 1Gbps line

FTTH is a best-effort service and the 1Gbps package doesn't have guaranteed 1Gbps speeds but your concerns are valid and we are troubleshooting the issue with MFN.

Our MetroFibre service is DHCP. With DHCP everyone gets an IP that asks for an IP from our server and the way we know who is who on the network is a walled garden. We keep all the devices here until they authenticate with the login.afrihost.com page which is branded as the activation page. This step is required each time you change your router or the wan mac address changes.

When I had a look it looks like you weren't activated and so had restricted access due to this.

I hear you re the "best effort" service, but when speeds are closer to 500Mbps than the 1Gbps I'm expected to pay for, then it is no longer a fair proposition. Or do you feel its is in fact fair? At what point does "best effort" become "not good enough"?

As regards the activation - I suspected it may be that but I was experiencing non-connectivity after multiple activations with telephonic support staff. Every time I did that the page would report that I was "Already activated" but there would be no connectivity for long periods of time as evidenced by the ping screenshot above. This continued for 7 days while I reverted to my LTE backup solution in order to connect to my Sunsynk inverter and CBI Astute timer for my geyser, as well as the rest of my home network.

The level of frustration I've experienced is really unlike anything since my ADSL line faults were just ignored by Telkom. A number of support staff members promised to phone me back, but only one - Domenic - ever did.

I have now cancelled the line and will move on a happier person. I no longer have any faith in Afrihost support and have moved to another ISP as well.

I just hope you didn't move to CISP as your ISP with MFN as they are having it way worse atm with their 1Gbps
This is a speedtest with Afrihost on MFN, they can definitely do it, seems to be an issue with Gauteng area I think (I could be wrong)
Trust me when I say this Afrinatic definitely does not want that speed, so getting that fixed will be a priority for them

I do understand your frustration regarding the speeds and you are definitely not being unreasonable. I'm getting pushback from MFN so I'm trying to get to the right people that can make a call on this which is not easy if you follow an FNO escalation matrix. This issue is not an easy or quick fix unfortunately so I do apologise I'm disappointed that we and I let you down here but I will do my best to get it resolved even if you continue to cancel.

I appreciate that you are doing your best and that you are probably overwhelmed with these kinds of issues. Its just that my experience as the end user was really terrible in this scenario...

It was with Afrihost/MFN that I was getting those slow speeds (for the pat 5 weeks). I saw some threads with the same issue with CISP and MFN which points to MFN as the common denominator.
 
Yea unfortunately when it comes to FNO's, Afrinatic has explained quite a few times to people that it becomes difficult escalating issues especially one's that are not easy to resolve
If I was in your shoes I would probably of downgraded to 500/500

That was my initial response, but after having zero connectivity for 7 days and no meaningful support I decided to cancel instead. The amount of time and frustration this has cost me has exceeded all thresholds (including financial)

I am fortunate to have Openserve as an alternative. I'd been with them on 500Mbps for just over 2 years with no problems, but wanted the upgrade to 1Gbps, hence the move to MFN. Bad move, so I corrected back to Openserve.
 
I also want some of that CBD oil you're sniffing :ROFL: One can hope!
So basically 20 Mbps entry, 250 Mbps for the next tier and 500 for the next? Sounds doable
