Mickey Arthur has resigned after clashing with Graeme Smith over selection issues.

According to Beeld and Die Burger, Corrie van Zyl will now take the team to India next month for a tour that involves two Tests and five ODIs. Van Zyl coached the Free State Eagles for several years before working at Cricket SA’s High Performance Centre.

Under Arthur, the Proteas won Test series in England and Australia in 2008, and held the No 1 Test ranking in 2009. However, his relationship with Smith has deteriorated this season, and they argued about team selections during the recent England series that was drawn 1-1.

Cape Town - Proteas coach, Mickey Arthur has resigned, according to a report from Eye Witness News.

It is understood his relationship with skipper Graeme Smith has deteriorated irreparably.

The shock resignation comes just over a year after the Protea’s historic Test series victory in Australia, and just a few days before the team’s departure for India.

Arthur and Cricket South Africa management reportedly held an emergency meeting in Johannesburg last week, to discuss the team’s struggles in the Test series against England.

It is believed Arthur met with Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Gerald Majola on Monday, about his severance package.

The tension between Arthur and Smith started apparently on the evening of the game, when Smith publicly questioned his coach’s decision to gamble with team selection.

The country’s cricket bosses are not commenting but it is believed former fast bowler Corrie van Zyl has been appointed as caretaker coach.

Did not really like Mickey and I cant wait for the day we drop Smith as captain. He is too full of himself and has had way too many issues with other players..think Polly and Klusner..

Biff does it again. Like or hate him, he is arrogant and a little to forthright with his ideas. Arthur has been a fantastic coach and has been instrumental in the successes of the team. His willingness to call in specialists to coach individuals going through lean times is noteworthy.

On radio this morning a caller mentioned that Smith, Kallis and Boucher have been calling the shots for some time now. If true, sad for Arthur. He's a nice guy!

So who should be the new coach?

So thought now goes to replacement...

Difficult, but needs a coach who is mentally tough and will hold respect of even the senior players.

The first name that comes to mind and worth considering, and if he would interested, would be Ray Jennings.

Your thoughts and other possibles?

Don't we already have Duncan Fletcher on a retainer at the moment - or had him during the england tour - maybe we should take him on in a permanent role again.

Now if only we get a twofer and Smith is shown the door too.

These two have been dragging the side down for over a year - individual performances mean nothing if the team continues to decline - chokers deluxe.

Smiths has always had strong allegiances to his buddies in the team. Anyway team selection - De Wet injured, so it was only Harris who got the chop. Unless Arthur was not allowed to get his way with all of his selections. Duminy and Prince - Arthur(/Smith) wanted to drop them and Smith (/Arthur) did not?

Smith has this history of rubbing a lot of people the wrong way, I mentioned previously I can't remember any other player (except for Shane Warne) that has been intensely disliked by quite a few South Africans ( that I have noticed). Not to mention public spats and other issues with Fleming, Vaughn, Pietersen ...

I cant agree more. Smith needs to go for the good of the national team.

Why does he need to call in outside help for what is essentially meant to be his job?

Biff may be arrogant but he gets the job done, and I don't see anybody else who can take over as captain anyway. I'm glad that Mickey Mouse is going - we need someone who can actually coach, not sit around giving press statements all day and call in outsiders to do his dirty work.

I remember when this happened in the England camp KP was demoted. In South African cricket the coach gets forced out. There is something seriously wrong behind the scenes if the indians are more powerful than the chiefs.

I agree. Smith has to stand down or be told to stand down. A win on Indian soil is unlikely. India came from behind to lead the test rankings. We've gone backwards ... time for change. Glad that Arthur made that decision, rather than him being forced out. We've lost too many critical games at his hand.

One thing that may concern me is speculation that Vincent Barnes was sacked too. I think he did pretty well as the bowling coach.

OT, look at the man's 1st class record - 68 matches, 323 wickets, ave of 11.95
