Great move, really a 'nothing' coach. The fact is that today in international cricket its the cptain that rules. In Aus its like that, Nielssen is the 'coach' but he is really only there to organise drills, prctice sessions etc...you hardly ever hear from him. Its Ponting that calls the shots, Ponting tht gets the team he wants, and Ponting that drops players etc.

You guys don't want Smith to have power, but he is the guy that got you plying well again, because his record shows that he leads from the front...just look at his contributions in winning games.

It seems they were fighting about team selections.
And Johan Botha, who many people say should be captain, got selected for the test team in India.

Smith hates competition, that we all know.

Botha isn't a test player, let alone a test captain. And now that he's been banned from bowling the d00sra, his performance in ODIs is questionable too.

So thought now goes to replacement...

Difficult, but needs a coach who is mentally tough and will hold respect of even the senior players.

The first name that comes to mind and worth considering, and if he would interested, would be Ray Jennings.

Your thoughts and other possibles?

wonder if we can convince Gary Kirsten to abandon his project in India and come take over at home. He is doing a fantastic job in India!!

If I had a choice, Smith to pack his bags, get out of the team.

One thing that may concern me is speculation that Vincent Barnes was sacked too. I think he did pretty well as the bowling coach.

OT, look at the man's 1st class record - 68 matches, 323 wickets, ave of 11.95

Not to taken anything away from Barnes but most of his cricket was played in the Howa Bowl, hardly the greatest level. He has been criticised a lot by the likes of donald and fanie de villiers. Vinninge fanie reckons barnes doesn't know the first thing about coaching guys like parnell.

The suggestion by some here to sack smith is ridiculous. There is no other candidate. Botha isn't a test player, ab is no captain and kallis and boucher is too old. The other option being parnell is way way too young.

Smith will stay and we will get a new coach. Candidates being mentioned are wessels and jeremy snape. Expect a few aussies to threw in their names as well, had 3 applying for the job when arthur got it last time. Richard pybus is another option.

On Jennings, you all know he also had issues with kallis, boucher and ntini as well?? It wasn't just smith. Jet's style works for youth cricket but he struggles when it comes to the top level profesionals.

I have to agree my choice will be Ray Jennings. He's a terrific coach but the main problem is Smith and his buddies. They are the ones that are running the show and when they are not happy with things your head will roll. Some players think they are bigger than the game and that is one of the main reasons why we are not winning constantly.

Yeah I will support any coach that get rid off the 'choking' mentality that usually happens around World Cup time :p

It's a pity that Gary Kirsten has been lost to South Africa. He could really be a valuable resource. I heard the commentators a few weeks ago saying that many cricketers who played before 1994 have been left out out of the whole set-up, which is a shame because we all know they have much-needed experience and skills. It is completely irrelevant, from a purely cricketing POV, that they played under an apartheid government. But as with everything, it's not politically attractive.

I mostly agree with you barring the fact that on his first test series we won very very convincinly in the West Indies... He is a guy that might seem a bit silly to some senior players but that is why a coach should be respected.

Also why not get Fanie on as a bowling coach? Well him or donald.

No he didn't. He lost his first test series in india 1-0 then lost at home to england. His final series he beat a poor west indian sides comprehensively away from home.

You are right that a coach should be respected but jennings is one of those guys that rubs a lot of senior players the wrong way. Its not just with SA side, he has had issues with players at provincial level as well.

I don't think Fanie has interest in becoming a coach, I think he likes his tv gig. He did advise parnell a bit in the last test. But was very critical of barnes afterwards. Said he told wayne a few things which should be basic but wayne had never heard of them.

It is laughable the number of people calling for Smith to get the chop on here!! We are having major issues to find someone decent to open with Smith and now people are calling for him to get the chop too. And what? Open with Botha (who seens to be a favourite of the Smith haters)?

There is no better opening batsmen in SA, and one of the best in the world, at the moment!

Also no better captain. There is a reason smith and dhoni were voted the two most respected captain in international cricket by the aussie cricketers association last year.

My bad. You are right.

Mr Phybus also looks like he might not be a bad choice.

What were their choices : Eng Strauss, SL Sanga, NZ Vettori - all green and recently appointed, Pakis ..., Bangl... I guess they were left with WI, India, SA. So no, your statement cannot hold.
