Microsoft could force Windows 10 update onto users

Microsoft has rolled out a silent update to a KB article – KB4023814 – that hints towards the latest Windows update being forced onto users, reports Softpedia News.

“If you’re currently running Windows 10 version 1507, version 1511, version 1607, version 1703 or version 1709, your computer detects the Windows 10 Update Assistant automatically,” says the KB4023814 article.

and no doubt many of the naysayers will complain that they being "forced" to secure their laptop/pc/work enviroments

damn if you do, damned if you don't

I have always adopted the latedt version of Windows and never had issues. Except 2000 that could not run Need For Speed because of the gimme.dll issues. Even ME worked pretty well provided you do not mix WDM and VXD drivers.

10 has been good to me and I always take the latest updates.

Personally as a software developer I keep annoying my manager by pushing for "Microsoft deployments". By pass testing and QA and just release to production. Let the end users be the testers.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad 300 laptop that tells me I have an update, installs it, reboots and then tells me that the update failed. Reboots, and uninstalls it, reboots. Most irritating. Happens almost daily.

Micro Shitty, just keeps getting worse and worse, we will not mention their absolute arrogance - why I am holding of buying a new Laptop ... , it was budgeted for month end after months of deliberation, guess a lot of nights consulting Uncle Google, to find a laptop, with hardware that is supported, by either Win7, or 8.1 drivers.

The problem is broken updates, more issues and software that stop working. Let people decide for themselves what they want to do.

But support old versions into infinity is exactly what causes the above.

So it seems like a perfectly logical move to reset the baseline every once in a while.

When did this become news, all "important" Windows 10 updates are automatically installed or "forced"?

I don't say never update. But I like to wait a couple of months for M$ to sort out the rubbish and when things are stable I will update when it is convenient to me. There is no need for them to force something onto someone. I am currently on 1803 and will update to 1809 when I feel like it.

Dear Bradley Prior. In the article you use the word numerous. It doesn't look like you understand what the word means. Especially since you use it as a link to the article in question where it says "isolated reports".

There's a difference between isolated reports and numerous reports.

It's good to keep systems updated. Security patches and such are there for a reason.

Windows 10 is not designed for your 486 laptop. I suggest you ask @sajunky for help for using antique hardware.

Yeah for sure the forced part I can agree with.

But so many people push back against updating at all or jumping to major versions I just can’t understand why they would stay on old crap forever.

Seems it wasn't designed for anything.

Maybe if forced changes weren't on the cards it wouldn't be an issue. Really why with every windows version only the option to go back to the classic theme as if there weren't any windows versions between 1991 and now? And it's perplexing how every new windows breaks older programs when even my modern Ryzen can still run programs from the 70's bar a few very specific exceptions.

Microsoft has a pathetic track record for WIN 10 Pro updates, looks like a bunch of children performing the codewritings, I can only assume they fired the whole lot and everything is 100% above board now, waisted my bandwith and hours of time, and running smooth as it should.
