do banks even use windows security for their systems?

i would imagine they something so hightech that no software would be able to crack it, im also pretty sure its not as simple as running software and getting everyone's bank accounts

cant see banks being this bad with their security

i can see what you saying though kas but i highly doubt this device/software would actually allow you to crack a bank

you never know though

Erm...the fact that the police want to crack your computer in the first place means that you shouldn't be complaining about them doing it. If you don't like having your PC cracked, don't do something that will make them crack it.

If the police of your country are likely to get crack-crazy and you don't like it, then move out. Having my PC cracked would be the least of my worries with police like that running around.

Plus, would you honestly prefer the criminals NOT have their PCs cracked?...

Clearly the concept of "metaphor" is lost on you...

I'm not saying that it will be used to crack banks, I was using the bank scenario as a "metaphor" for what Microsoft is doing.

Here's another one for you:

Imagine General Motors giving out keys which will open and start every car they have ever produced.

I don't think every Tom, Dick and Harry will have access to one of these. Chances are that a very, very few top-ranking people will.

wizard how many ppl actually own pc's in zimbabwe?

the ones that do more than likely dont have power to run them

how is mugabe going to hack into the poorest country in africa and obtain information when the ppl dont have pc's rofl

dont use windows if your a criminal end of story

use something free for your kiddie porn

I know 2 people in Zim with PC`s.. but then.. I know very few zimys.

However Killa, you are just messing around now, what about the other two examples.. Russia and China? Seriously man.. read my posts, dont just answer the bits you want to. You are cherry picking your debate points, and ignoring basically the whole point of my argument. *sigh* :(

Microsoft say they have sent out hundreds, and all it takes is one to get into the wrong hands. Only the top-ranking people are meant to have one in much the same way only the top-ranking people were supposed to know the ending to Harry Potter before it was released.

This is not something that can be kept secret.

All the capabilities of that thumb drive are easily available on the internet right now; there's no bit secret about it. All MS is doing is putting the right tools for a forensic auditor into one place.

If a system is not physically secure, it's not secure. If anyone can get to it if it's running and not password protected, it's as good as wide open.

(And yes, much the same applies to Unix-based systems too).

MS & Banking

Even if it is password protected, that doesn't mean anything ;)

You look like the types of guys that can help me :D

You know all these ATM's that are getting blown up ?

Can anyone get me the insides of one of these blown up ATM's ? -- you know -- the computing bits.

I would like to see just how safe a system can be made EVEN if you can get physical access to it. ( An ATM is obviously a computer --in DRAG ) :D

I am assuming that NO little MS "dinky-toy" is going to crack this baby -- so I guess THAT is the system I need on my machines. :D

BUT -- WHAT is it -- a special secure version of SOLARIS -- with encrypted HDD ?

Feel free to let us know if you have been able to do an autopsy on one of these beasts.

personally i think this is good thing

most normal ppl have nothing to hide cept some pirated goods and maybe a bit of adult porno
I agree, the only people who should be worried are the criminals.

I was using the bank example as a METAPHOR. GOOGLE IT. This has nothing to do with banks, I was using the banking as an example of what Microsoft is effectively doing.

To break it down further, considering you still don't seem to get it:

Bank = Windows
International Banking Corporation X = Microsoft
Vault Combination = USB Thumbdrive Microsoft are giving to police

Could I possibly make this any more clear?

i understand it but your making out like banks and high security places use windows for their security, they dont

there is no ways this microsoft tool could crack a bank or any windows computer with good security as the security is not coming from windows OS

let me put it this way

windows is the vault, the lock on the vault and combination is a separate program and nothing microsoft could bring out would ever crack the combination because its not windows securing it or providing the combination

im not buying that this thing from microsoft can crack anything but a normal user who uses windows for password and security

Okay. I seriously give up. I'm not even going to attempt to explain this to you.
