Microsoft Office for iPad launched

With one notable exception: Office 365 for University @R699.99 once-off for 4 years (including additional 20GB OneDrive space, and 60 Skype minutes a month). 2 mac/pc installs, ipad apps, and Office Online.
Great - my eldest will be entering varsity in about nine years…

It's a trap. Download for free but you need to spend $99.99 a year on a subscription so you can actually use it for more than just reading.

This is general knowledge, Fudzy.

Try searching. Check Wikipedia under App Store.

Apple take 30% of all sales through the App Store, so independent (non-Apple) developers only get 70% of the end-user price.

I thought everyone knew this.

There is no way on God's little earth that Microsoft will hand 30% of Office revenues to Apple.

Well you learn something new everyday. I knew they took a commission, just didn't think it was that much. Just shows you the appeal of the platform, if only all businesses were able to take that much :D

Office for the iPad has been ready for over a year. Microsoft proposed various payment models, including in-app purchase, but Apple vetoed every single suggestion and insisted that they take 30% of all Office for iOS sales. There was no way on earth that Microsoft was going to agree to that. So eventually they decided to make it free on App Store, but read-only, and requiring an O365 sub for the full read-write version. That's what was released on the 27th.

Is the home use version gratis?

Just for completeness (please correct me if this has changed):

* Apple's App Store takes 30% on all sales.
* Windows Store take 30% up to $25K, and then 20% thereafter.
* Google Play takes 30% on all sales.
* Windows Phone Store takes 30% on all sales.
