Microsoft reveals Windows 7

Hmmm, I feel so alone after reading all your posts...

Ran XP for a good while, was happy with it. Functionality still one of the best. Got real quick bored with the look and plainness of the GUI.

Installed Vista (still running it) and am very happy with it. All my hardware is working, all my applications are working. No issues, it's stable and it looks good. Haven't got bored with the GUI yet and the regular updates keeps improving my experience...

I for one WILL get Win7 and know for a fact that I will be happy with it.

Give M$ a break and let them do what they do. They're trying really hard, and in my opinion, doing a good job

Regarding Office as a cloud service available online: I can actually see that happening in the near future. The whole advent of OpenXML makes the online/multi-platform capabilities of Office documents a reality. I was at a Microsoft Interop conference a while ago and they demonstrated an online service consuming and displaying an Office document 100% in a browser.

Microsofts downfall comes in with its legacy support... It will always need to be backward compatible..this tying their hands to really take initiative..not going to put out any predictions about windows 7, cause really couldn't care less just how wow it is...I'm down with the penguin

Dunno why there need to be so many haters. I've been using Vista for quite some time
now and all my apps works fine (no, I don't play old freakin games from 1925) but I am
a developer who works with software, website and game development and all my tools
works just fine.

I am guessing the guys that sais its not working for 'em are trying to run Vista on old hardware
in which case you needa stay on XP as Vista was created to look towards the future and build
for new hardware. Concering apps, you can get quite a few of them working by just installing
in a path different to "Program Files" (to do with admin rights), and also try to run your app with
admin rights on, on it -> right click, properties, copatibility -> "run this program as administrator"

After actually reading all the reviews of the M3 and later builds it looks pretty good to me. Not a major update but it will basically be what Vista was meant to be, and that isn't bad at all.

Nice that they're actually improving performance over the last release, it looks quite a bit faster than Vista already apparently.

No, it's just that Vista really is cr-p, and taking yet another several years just to turn Windows 7 into "what Vista should have been, sort of" (even if they manage to succeed at that, which is questionable) IS a completely ridiculous joke to anybody with standards.

Maybe I've just been around longer, but I've been watching history repeat itself since Windows 3.1 - every single time it's a case of "the next version is going to be great, really this time", every single time a whole lot of people believe it, and every single time it's a disappointment. Rinse, repeat. Some people have short memories (or are simply newcomers to this hamster wheel, or are naive) and Microsoft banks on that.

I'm with you on that. There is a reason MS is were they are. If youre software isn't working on Vista, don't blame MS, they didn't create that software, blame the vendor whose software you are trying to run - it's them that can write proper software!

Why do you need to run an application as administrator anyway? 99% of all applications shouldn't need to run as administrator but still have the requirement.

Also I think alot of people attack MS on the quality of Vista (which initially was a messup) without understanding the scale of the change to the architecture it brought about, and how difficult it was to make that architecture even vaguely backwards compatible...

Here is why vista suck


1) Hardware doesn’t run well on Vista (even new hardware)

2) The new security of Vista is overkill most of the time, being prompted for every little thing is bad enough but Vista even labels existing applications as suspicious.

3) Lack of drivers for older and newer hardware.

4) Power options do not change automatically for laptops depending on whether you are plugged or unplugged from a power source.

5) The Start Menu has been redone with a completely different look, unfortunately it is hard to navigate and find what you are looking for.

6) Rebooting a Vista machine is supposed to be faster, but it actually takes longer to reboot than XP.

7) The much talked about Aero UI is great to look at, but with all the resources it takes just to run it all you will be able to do is look at it and not actually work on your pc.

8 ) The many different versions of Vista will be confusing to some basic computer users who are not sure of what exactly they need so in the end they will probably figure more expensive means better and pay for a version they don’t need in the first place.

9) Horrible graphics performance that was not an issue with XP.

10) Although the look is “improved” basic functions like add/remove programs are hard to find.

11) VPN doesn’t work correctly, even though there are a few work arounds for this it is still not an easy process.

12) Software that is supposed to be windows compatible shuts down randomly.

13) Firefox runs ten times better than IE7 in vista.

14) The sidebar is another resource hog.

15) Readyboost seems like a good idea if you can get it to work.

16) DVD playback through windows media player or media center lacks quality.

17) Minor changes to hardware may prevent the system to boot up.

18) No “open with” when right clicking on a file.

19) My brand new Netgear Eva8000 streaming media device will not work wirelessly with vista due to some tcp stack problem in vista (it did work perfect with xp).

20) Windows Improved search is a total mess and not very accurate

You must be one of those oaks strapped in a chair while working with windows. With your eyelids taped to your forehead. You know the ones that patiently wait for windows to boot up, then crashes, then don't mind by restarting, then doing a repair, have the time in the world. Eventually when you get to the logon screen, you patiently wait for all the services to startup, then dares to logon. After you patiently waited for your desktop to appear after all the flashes that popped up and took away control, you set your self a time to not click on the start button, because you patiently wait for Vista to load all your applications in the back ground. Then after you prayed that you successfully got to the start menu and Vista didn't pop something up that took away control, you try to load an application from your recently loaded application list, solitair, outlook and excel. Once you have waited for your application to load and stop jerking, you slowly engage try and actually use the features. Then after after you try to open up the 4th application, you see your memory usage exceeding 1GB, and smile because you knew this, and you are ready to accept the consequences of your actions not to upgrade your hardware. Am I close, or do you work for Microsoft and received everything for free from them?

Interestingly, Microsoft also says that Windows 7 will be focused on core functions, while many of the client applications will be migrated to its Windows Live cloud service.

This will be a good thing. A more modular-based approach is what windows desperately needs in order to cut down on bloat. That said, I can kind of understand why they "bloat it" like they do. The alternative is having to put the Vista disk into your machine every time you want to enable a new piece of hardware or enable a new part of the OS.

Don't get me wrong. I exclusively use *nix for all my work/server purposes. Still, I'm starting to see the other side of this "bloat" argument.

Knowing how crap Vista is, I would think it would be easier for Microsoft to just add Windows 7 "features" to XP.

Honestly... vista is pretty good since SP1, complaining about the price I agree with but truth is Vista/windows 7 is the future for Microsoft so get use to it.
