Microsoft tackles local software pirates

Ill happily take my chanches with viruses lol.... Windows 7 costs as much as a entry level PC lol....

Bring on Fedora... looking forward to Google CromeOS

Ive received two free copies of Ms Works already after passing blind audits.

They send someone to you to ask for a quote for a pc and all related software. I always list my prices induvidually (per item ) and i have my OS and Office Std/Pro prices listed every time. I dont think they do this anymore though....

Agree

4yrs ago I reported a local Somerset West PC dealer (who now operated from his home) on pirated XP that he charged his clients for. M$ where only interested if we could give M$ a receipt and a counterfeit DVD (it had to look like the real thing).

So nothing happened.

Moral of the story - M$ doesnt actually care if you pirate....

Its because they had 1 million unhappy users. Just because you have a cracked version today does not mean you will not have a legally licenced version tomorrow.

Then why bother about piracy?
If it were not for pirated copies of M$ software, M$ would not exist.

Dude, those games are insane prices... who in their right mind would pay R700 for a single game?

I'm not surprised they pirate as they are probably saving more like R500 or R600.

What would you choose:

Option 1: R2400 Console and R700 for a launch title (Price always drops after a few months!)
Option 2: R6000 Console and PC Prices

When I was young and ignorant I pirated without knowing it was wrong but now I don't pirate at all.

I am a little out of touch with the prices of games (I believe the last game I purchased was nearly a decade ago), but honestly at those prices I would choose option 3.

Option 3: R2400 Console and R100 for a pirated launch title (add on whatever it costs in labour to get someone to rig it so that it can play those pirated games, can't be more than a few hundred rands)

While I agree that piracy is wrong, charging a kid R700 for a game is just as wrong if not 'wronger' (hey look a new word :D). There is no way anyone can justify that price and at that point I see no reason why someone should feel guilty about piracy.

The fact that piracy exists shows that people want the games, they are just not prepared to pay that huge price for them. Bring the prices down and the kids will buy the originals as the schlep of dodging the piracy police, finding someone to jippo the console and having to keep the console off the internet where the powers that be can detect the modifications or whatever just won't justify the small difference in price between the pirate games and the originals.

A real crime!

Hmmmmmmm, let's see...

Ubuntu 9.10 = Free (or R50 worth of bandwidth – max!)
Mac OS X 10.6 = R329
MS Windows 7 Ultimate = R3199

Don't get me wrong, piracy is bad, especially if third parties are profiting from it, but does anyone else spot the REAL criminals here?

;)

Worry about the proper crime rates in this country, not pirating, SA's crime rate is so high as it is and you're worrying about overseas companys??

+1
In Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal, someone was selling copies of Windows 7 Ultimate for R130 on an online auction site - a whopping R3 000 below the average selling price.

Win7 for R130!! That's R3000 above what I'll pay for it :D

.

I guess I should be proud to work for a company that only sells legal software, MS should give us a 'you are LEGENDS badge'

:D

"For example, one piracy exploit caused more than one million reported system crashes on non-genuine machines before Microsoft could resolve it."

Why is Microsoft trying to fix software bugs in non-genuine machines  !? They should leave it as it is so that users of non-genuine software pay the costs, otherwise Microsoft is fueling the piracy by supporting and patching bootleg versions of Windows OS

“The risk of viruses hidden in fake software is a growing problem - especially given that 36% of all software in South Africa is used illegally. Victims risk losing personal information, having their identities stolen, and wasting valuable time and money,” explained Nyati.

This happens to me regardless if I run original Wondows or not. Wondows is a fat freeking virus! All I can say is, shame, poor Bill, he probably couldnt afford to buy his new island this year, the recession is hitting everyone.

Come to freedom, come to Linux and if you are willing to unbrainwash yourselves from MS clutches, you will never look back.
Mark Shuttleworth, kick MS in their nuts!

Bill Gates in SA

Relax everyone

It probably has to do with the fact that Gates is in SA as we tap away

Come to speak to his old buddy Zooooma about AIDS and HIV ( as one pirate to another )

Well pirated windows is really not that different to the geniune one in fact there is no difference and in all my years i have yet to see a virus infected pirate copy of windows. The best are the oem copies for laptops :D.

The thing is microsoft have to crack the whip or piracy will spiral out of control, if they did and said nothing everyone would pirate so it would be far worse but i do not think microsoft give a crap if you pirate, they just try to scare people into thinking they do :D.

If anything linux suffers from so many pirating windows because if they could not they may actually opt for linux so linux should support this anti piracy BS :D. I mean there must be a reason people pirate windows when they could use linux for free haha.

Spot-on!!

Microsoft SA just wants to show ol' Bill how ''paraat'' they are.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the Microsoft SA web site is still offering last years downloads. Go figure. :p

what a joke

one of our competitors is selling point of sale systems with pirated windows on every single machine. Over the last 5 years they have probably pirated over a thousand copies of windows and a thousand copies of office

their clients have reported them to BSA, SAFACT AND Microsoft.

Nothing has happened. No-one has ever even bothered responding to the issue.

Time to find a tip-offs anonymous website ... or crimeline.co.za if you're that sure and serious about it?

Well yeah :D run a bootleg win 7, save money and than spend it on a decent antivirus like Kaspersky or Norton... that should take care of any suspisious virus activity, incoming and outgoing on the host OS :p

But seriously, it all comes down to our morals. Some have less some have more. Its a choice.Which one will you be?
