Microsoft unveils Windows 7 prices

They should just have it available for download at $50 - cuts out the middleman and all other associated costs.
Debit my c/card and be done with it.
Lord knows they can organize the servers to run it after the October release.

This pricing is insane, think I would rather upgrade to Ubuntu Ultimate Edition, they have a much better pricing structure! :D:D

Still got Kubuntu 9.04 as backup - at R2k for Win7 I'll have to start reading and get Linux sorted :p
Though I still have XP as a fall back.
Triple boot FTW :D

Microsoft also said it was offering users in the United States and several other countries the opportunity to pre-order Windows 7 at a more than 50 percent discount, $50 for the Home Premium version and $100 for the Professional one.

What about Ultimate pre orders?

Linux and Apple are victorious. 2000+ rand is expensive for even a decent OS.

They follow the simple principle of no-conomics...

Rather sell 1 at 2K than 10 at R200 - so now all you have is:
1 - retail
9 - pirate
and a @$@ load of money spent on curbing piracy...

Time they bump up the retirement date for XP by another 5 Years! By that time, on new hardware it will be as fast as Linux :D

What is this Ubuntu Ultimate you guys talking about? Do you have to pay for this version of Ubuntu? If so why do you have to pay for it? What makes it so special? Where can I read up on this Ubuntu Ultimate??? Me likes to wanna read and learn more :D

Just a side note, the suckers in Europe will NOT be able to upgrade, so upgrade pricing is irrelevant for them [and anyone who agrees with the EU]. Microsoft continues to punish the EU for throwing in "last minute" legal changes and thus they couldn't make a version that can upgrade -without- IE.

It's a case if you had XP with IE, you can't upgrade to a version without IE.

Looks like MS wants to get thrown out of Europe. The EC is going to nail them so hard.

Warrants of arrest for Ballmer, Gates and the rest?
Seizure of all assets?

I will have a look at this ultimate edition...sounds interesting.

@ Bismuth.....if I like what I see on the website and want it, then I will pay you for the CD/DVD and shipping and a little something for you to treat your girlfriend :-)

I ordered my Ubuntu 9.04 via the shipit site and waited about 3 weeks for the damn thing to get here.

LOL, I donwloaded 9.04, and had to wait a day.

UU 2.2 I will only get on Monday, I see.

Why do people like this, I consider it bloatware.

Bloatware? Have you tried a Microsoft OS, now THAT is bloatware!. And unlike an MS product, you don't have use UU, can also use the standard 9.04 or whatever, and add extras as you need. Although, the standard 9.04 comes with virtually everything most people would need.
