Microsoft unveils Windows 7 prices

Microsoft also said it was offering users in the United States and several other countries the opportunity to pre-order Windows 7 at a more than 50 percent discount, $50 for the Home Premium version and $100 for the Professional one.

Are we one of those countries?
I will place my order now!

Snipped from the bloated article:

Vista Home Premium Upgrade would cost $120.
Vista Professional Upgrade would cost $200.
Vista Ultimate Upgrade $220.

Windows 7 Home Premium = $200
Windows 7 Professional = $300
Windows 7 Ultimate = $320.

For me, my 2 pc's with Windows XP Pro and my servers with Ubuntu have saved me about $500 in upgrades so far.

What was not made clear in the article (to me at least) is that the pre-order discount is only for upgrade versions of Windows 7. Otherwise i would be ordering right now...

http://store.microsoft.com/Help/Orders-Shipping?err=t6:
"Windows 7 Pre-Order Promotional Pricing is a limited time offer good only on internet pre-orders of qualifying upgrade versions of Windows 7 (Home Premium Upgrade or Professional Upgrade)"

WTF, who is going to pay over 1k for the OS on a home PC? Are they mad! You can rather upgrade your GPU or HDD or something. Until Windows is <R500 for home PCs, piracy will prevail.

Yippee for Ubuntu! Bought a brand new laptop a week ago...I barely finished the start up settings for Windows Vista when I formatted the HDD and installed Ubuntu.

Not gonna start the whole Windows VS Linux thing...but hell...for those prices I am sure glad there is something out there like Ubuntu. I wish I could have bought my laptop without windows and perhaps saved even a bit more on the price. :(

I recently bought a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium and I thought that price was bad. They are absolutely mad!

Just a side note, the suckers in Europe will NOT be able to upgrade, so upgrade pricing is irrelevant for them [and anyone who agrees with the EU]. Microsoft continues to punish the EU for throwing in "last minute" legal changes and thus they couldn't make a version that can upgrade -without- IE.

It's a case if you had XP with IE, you can't upgrade to a version without IE.

"We will not be able to offer an upgrade product within Europe," said John Curran, Windows business lead at Microsoft UK, adding that only the full version of the software will be available to Europeans.

In Europe, Microsoft will send buyers of new PCs a full version of the software rather than an upgrade version. The European edition will lack Internet Explorer.

Actually I've seen many instances where you can get a refund on the copy of Windows that comes with that machine, it is a serious fight though and IMO not worth the effort.

That is provided you were never presented with the EULA and didn't click the Agree button.

Well...for the price that you pay for a Apple machine it is only fair that they make the software cheaper. I would have to take out a loan to afford a Apple Mac :-)

Hmm./ I thought the RC was a good idea on home PC. Looks like I might run into trouble with the 2hr shutdowns next year. I aint payin that for as OS.

Can you crack an OS that is already installed? Or will I have to acquire myself a cracked DVD and re-install?

Ag nee Porchrat....i already clicked the EULA thing. I always just click yes yes yes haha. Oh well....not gonna have sleepless nights about it...just thought it would be nice to be able to buy a laptop with no OS on it and you can put on what you want.

LOL. I'd buy it for $50. No more. But it is clear where people are going to be getting their Windows 7 ISOs from. And it's not the shops.
