So I got this Afrihost deal because my Fiance was sick of the trouble she was having with Cell C and Telkom Mobile. So she's quite happy with it, except that at her house it only ever connects via 2G and is completely useless because of how slow the 2G network is. I have an MTN sim in my tablet and when I am by her I have perfect 3G coverage. But the MiFi device refuses to connect to the 3G network at her house. It's fine anywhere else though.

I tried setting the connection mode to 3G only but then it does not connect at all and says there is no signal.

Any advice? I haven't had a chance to put my other MTN sim into the MiFi device yet to check, but has anybody else experienced this? I have also checked coverage maps and she is within the coverage area.

Should work. You tried placing the MiFi in other areas of the house?
Maybe find a "sweet spot"?

Yip, moved it around a bit. not very far though. Will try that again but it was on charge the last time so just moved it as far as I could with the cable still connected.

I also seem to have that problem, full bar 3G on normal sim but only 2G on Mifi? No biggie though, I dont use it much at home anyway

MTN signal is patchy. To give you an example :

1) samsung galaxy sII - I get full signal .. speed test below 1mbps
2) mifi router - only edge - can't even get to speed test at times.
3) vodaphone router (dongle) - full signal and the best speeds. (+- 3 mbps down and 2.5 up)

All at the same place (placements). I know I live probably in an area where I'm most likely obstructed from the closest tower, but it may explain your situation too.

I have to have mine upright in certain places & other it lays flat.
Also make sure you have your network setting set to 3G Only.
If cell is getting 3G then your MiFi should as well.
Another option is testing someone else's MiFi, this way you can eliminate whether yours is faulty.
