Minor concerns on 5800 XM

Hi Chaps,

Ive seen these things on other threads, but these topics have become weeks old, and scattered. So this would be both helpful to me, and beneficial to potential 5800 users...

I am about to buy the Nokia 5800 for my significant other, and I have a few concerns that I cannot find a conclusion on, so any feedback on this would be great (feedback instead if speculation).

1. The gps expires after 6 months? She does not care about navigation, so would the gps module still "function" after 6 months with something like google maps?

2. The speaker defect that was inherent in all the 5800's before february, is this still a concern for devices on the shelf at the moment? Old stock? I dont want to buy one with the previous broken speaker.

3. Which firmware version is Vodacom supporting at this stage. 20. ?

I've had mine for almost two months together with my N96 that I have for about 5 and a half months. If you don't have the money to buy a N96 then you wont make a mistake on getting the 5800XM. It's just awesome.

The GPS module will still work yes. The navigation you get is Nokia Maps. You can use other software like Garmin which is way better. Google maps will also work. You just wont have voice navigation with it.

Well, according to the users the speaker problem will only occur after a few months due to humidity. I don't know, I mean, non of my phones were ever exposed to humid conditions so why would this be a concern? Mine is still working.

3. Which firmware version is Vodacom supporting at this stage. 20. ?

AFAIK Vodacom also released the latest firmware now. The same version that is used worldwide.

Does sound right indeed.
I would prefer Vodacom give me the updated speaker models seeing as nokia admitted and fixed this problem, but you have a good point..

The license is for turn-by-turn guidance which get's turned off after 6 months. You can renew it for a fee.
If you get the phone, you don't have to start the 6 months. You can simply use the maps and the GPS to get your position and locate addresses, browse the map etc. You can also use another provider like Garmin Mobile XT, but they also have a license system. The newer Maps 3 is out on beta and people are enjoying using it. I don't know how well it works on the 5800 version of Symbian - it may not be fully fixed yet.

I do the driving and my berry does the nav, she just needs to gps to work with google maps, for latitude thats all
