Engine Power

The Outlander is powered by Mitsubishi’s naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre petrol engine with 123 kW and 222 Nm of torque. A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is standard and combines with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control System to improve traction on all surfaces. Fuel consumption is claimed at 8.2 L/100km.

The driver can toggle between drive modes such as Normal, Eco, Snow or Gravel.

In terms of safety, the Outlander is equipped with 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control with traction control and hill start assist.

Mitsubishi Outlander gets new look, more features and lower price

Mitsubishi is sweetening the deal for those seeking a family-sized SUV with all-wheel-drive. The facelifted Outlander seven-seater has arrived in South Africa sporting a new look, lower price tag and beefed up specification.

You can tell the 2020 model apart by its new ‘Dynamic Shield’ front bumper and grille design, complete with boomerang shaped elements, as well as by its redesigned alloy wheels and new rear bumper highlights.

Inside you’ll find upgraded leather seats, new dashboard trim and a redesigned 20.3cm touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as well as a reverse camera and park distance control.

There is only one model derivative, badged GLS, and it comes fully loaded. With a price tag of R499 995, it’s also sixty grand cheaper than the previous version.

New SUV, destined for North and South America, will be inspired by bold Engleberg Tourer concept

The next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander will draw heavy styling influence from last year's striking Engleberg Tourer concept – but we won't see it in UK dealerships.

As shown in an official preview video (below) released by the brand ahead of its 16 February unveiling, the Toyota RAV4 rival will sport Mitsubishi's new chrome-heavy Dynamic Shield front end with slim LED headlights and sizeable air intakes, plus a wraparound-effect front windscreen.

Behind the A-pillars, the SUV looks to have evolved more subtly over today's car, with visible differences limited to chrome door handles, a more pronounced swage line and reshaped brake lights.

Mitsubishi rolls out new Outlander

Mitsubishi is not renowned for rolling out all-new models all that often, but its new Outlander, which is based on the new Nissan X-Trail's platform, is a boldly styled 7-seater with an upmarket interior. Could this family-car eventually bolster the Japanese brand's prospects in the local midsized-SUV market?

The 4th-generation Outlander was unveiled on Amazon Live (it is claimed to be the first car to be launched on the streaming platform) and, by virtue of being based on the next-generation X-Trail, the newcomer is the first Mitsubishi model to be produced under the banner of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Mitsubishi, however, says it’s “based on the ‘I-Fu-Do-Do’ concept, which means authentic and majestic in Japanese…

In true Mitsubishi tradition, the Outlander’s exterior design is dominated by the Dynamic Shield motif, with the combination of high-positioned DRLs that serve as the “eyes” of the front visage, while the main LED headlamps (with washers, we note) are positioned lower on the bumper... in fact, they're just above the fog lamps! To balance out the bulky sheet metal of the people-mover, um, SUV, Mitsubishi has fitted the Outlander that's featured in the press material with eye-catching 20-inch alloys that complement the lashings of exterior brightwork.

As for local availability, that has yet to be confirmed. The Outlander is scheduled to be introduced in North America in April, with the rest of the world to follow during the rest of 2021. The newcomer (and its distant cousin, the next-generation X-Trail, for that matter) were not scheduled to arrive in Mzansi as soon as this year, but that could change. We'll keep you posted...

New Mitsubishi Outlander revealed with bold looks (and Nissan platform)

Mitsubishi has revealed its new Outlander, handing what it bills as its “flagship SUV” bold exterior styling.

Now built on a Nissan platform set to be shared with the upcoming new X-Trail (under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance), the Outlander has entered its fourth generation, wearing the Japanese firm’s latest family face and featuring seven seats as standard plus as many as 11 airbags.

Power comes from what Mitsubishi calls a “newly developed” 2,5-litre petrol engine linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) featuring eight virtual steps. From what we can tell, this naturally aspirated 2,5-litre four-pot makes 135 kW and 245 N.m in US-spec form.

The four-wheel-drive model employs a hydraulic clutch driven by an electric motor in the centre coupling, variably splitting torque between the front and rear axles. There are six driving modes on offer (five for two-wheel-driven models).

All-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV teased with tech advancements

The next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been teased as a flagship for the range that was revealed in February this year. Using the upcoming Nissan X-Trail’s platform, the Mitsubishi claims that the new eco-friendly variant boasts a number of improvements over the previous model.

Set to roll out in Japan in the second half of this financial year, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will offer improved motor output and increased battery capacity over the previous generation model that was launched in 2013. With this, the brand claims a more powerful road performance and greater driving range.

Thanks to the benefits of its new platform, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV integrates components and an optimised layout that allows it to accommodate seven passengers in three rows with improved packaging, offering a new level of comfort and utility in an SUV.

The aforementioned debut model, which never made its way to the South African market, acted as a testament to Mitsubishi’s dedication in the research and development of electric vehicles since 1964. This car was sold in more than 60 countries around the world and, as the manufacturer puts it, is a leader in the PHEV category.

The fourth generation Outlander range is currently available globally with a naturally aspirated 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which gives it a power output of 135 kW and 245 N.m of torque. This is distributed to the wheels via a CVT. It’s understood that this unit will suppliment the PHEV detalied above.

I actually quite like it. Looks interesting unlike most other in its segment.

I don't mind the fact it shares the platform and engine with the X-trail and atleast Mitsubishi has kept their AWD system. One thing Mitsubishi is lacking is a car that is actually exciting and fun. Nissan has the new 400z, Toyota has the Yaris GR, Supra and GR86 but Mitsubishi has nothing.

Speaking of fun Mitsubishi cars, apparently there could be a performance version of it according to Car Advice Australia.

I Have No Idea How The Mitsubishi Outlander Is $10,000 Cheaper Than A Kia Telluride

It's a three-row, seven-seat SUV that's ten grand less than the competition. Amazingly, it gets away with it.

Is this why the Outlander costs 10 grand than a Telluride, a couple grand on top of that if you go to a Honda Pilot or the Toyota Highlander, best-seller that it is? Is there any more tinniness to the Outlander’s doors? Could it be saving that much money attaching the grille directly to the hood in one big piece, not distinct panels? Is there anything chintzy to its seats, its displays? I don’t think so. People just ... don’t buy Mitsubishis these days. The Outlander is basically all Mitsubishi has these days, so I sort of understand the discount price, even if I can’t exactly pinpoint where Mitsubishi saved on cost.

Drive a Mitsubishi Mirage and you can instantly tell how and where Mitsubishi saved money with the car. It is smaller than something like a Honda Fit, more bare, more roughly finished. Aside from the engine, there’s really not much about the Outlander that gives anything up to higher-cost competitors.

Ultimately, the Outlander gives you just as much car as Mitsubishi can get away with, while still keeping three rows and seven seats. I expected it to not feel like enough. A couple hundred miles later, and its competitors feel like excess.

Mitsubishi Really Hopes The Outlander PHEV Reminds You Of Back When It Made Cooler Cars

The Outlander is a fine SUV, but Mitsubishi seems desperate to convince you it's something more.

For the first time in a long time, Mitsubishi has the closest thing to a winner on its hands with the 2022 Outlander. And that’s great for Mitsubishi! We all want Mitsubishi to be the best Mitsubishi it can be, and producing a car someone might actually want to buy is an important step toward achieving that goal.

The only issue is that Mitsubishi doesn’t really have anything else in the pipeline to follow up the Outlander except for a plug-in hybrid version of the SUV due next year. So it’s left little choice but to play that puppy up, big time.

How big? By reminding us of Pajeros bounding over sand dunes and Lancer Evolutions skittering on the ice-slick, sidewinding passes of Monte Carlo. Yes: By reminding us of how it used to rally.

Mitsubishi’s YouTube account released the above video last Friday, the same day it sent out a press release about the S-AWC — that stands for Super All Wheel Control — system in next year’s Outlander PHEV. Mitsubishi fans will know S-AWC as the automaker’s branding for its all-wheel drive system that once underpinned the Lancer Evolution X. And its resurgence might ring more significant if S-AWC wasn’t also the name of the all-wheel drive option on the regular Outlander you can buy today, with all 181 of its horsepower.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV design breaks cover ahead of official reveal

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been unveiled by the Japanese brand ahead of its official unveiling. Styling-wise the eco-friendly SUV will share the same styling as its petrol-powered alternative that was launched to global markets earlier this year.

Sales for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are scheduled to begin in Japan in mid-December and select markets in the second half of 2022.

The brand says that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been penned under its Bold Stride design language which places a strong focus on presence and a solid stance. At the front, the brand has evolved the Dynamic Shield design, which aims to project power, reassurance and presence.

The side view expresses bold proportions, with thick horizontal accents and sharply defined character lines, extending from the front to the rear. Additionally, 20-inch wheels, along with the muscular front and rear fender flares have been applied.

On the tailgate, which features distinctive PHEV badging, a hexagon motif makes mention of the spare tyres mounted on the back of popular Mitsubishi SUV heritage models while the horizontal-themed T-shaped signature taillights emphasise the vehicle’s width and reinforce the look of stability.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) premiered online the fully redesigned, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model of the Outlander crossover SUV. Sales will commence in Japan on December 16, 2021 followed by Australia and New Zealand in the first half of 2022 and North America in the second half of 2022.

The all-new PHEV model of Mitsubishi's flagship SUV brings together its expertise in electrification and all-wheel control technologies, while also incorporating a newly developed platform and an array of advanced technologies.
