Mixing LRP with Unleaded

I drive an Uno and found that mixing my petrol 80% leaded (LRP) with 20% unleaded allows me to drive significantly further per tank. I always put R100 in whenever I fill up. Filling up with only unleaded or only leaded I can only get about 80kms from R100, but when mixing I can get up to 120kms. I have tested this over and over again and works every time. Super bummed now that LRP will be discontinued by December.
 
If your car is really old you could destroy the engine by using unleaded.
 
You can do a unleaded head conversion with hardened valve seats and high grade exhaust valves.
Many of the older car enthusiasts in the U.K and U.S. have gone this route.

Yes, I'm going to have to go that route with my 1968 Wolseley 6/110. I am not impressed! :mad:

If your car is really old you could destroy the engine by using unleaded.

You won't destroy the engine, you will just run the risk of burning valves if you don't add an upper cylinder lubricant with every tank of petrol.

I recently bought a replacement inline 6 (chevy 230) for my project car, replacing the old 216 , and am now seriously considering doing the conversion during the rebuild.

Biggest problem being most parts will have to come from the U.S. :( frigging exchange rate

Any idea what sort of cost one would look at for mass purchasing of deca-litres of cylinder lubricant ? :D

I would do the head whilst the motor is on the bench, I believe it's not such a mission if you are working on the engine. At least, in your case, the Chev parts should all be off the shelf. I have a nasty idea that I'm going to have to have mine all individually done! :(

So what are we supposed to do if we usually fill up with LRP? Are there any dangers to switching from LRP to unleaded?

If you read the whole thread you will see what "dangers" lie ahead for those of us with older cars. The primary one is burnt valves, as Unleaded does not have the lubricating properties found in Leaded petrol.

This is the first I have heard. Drove past the local Shell and Engen today and plenty of LRP.

Well I've asked at many stations, and they all say the same thing.

I have also seen many stations that still have the red signs on their pumps that state LRP, but these have been converted to 95 ULP, they just need to change the stickers on the pumps.
 
Look, if your car is so old that unleaded fuel will damage it then I'd say its about time that something damages it and puts it out of its misery. With the exception of some rare classic that should be parked in a museum of course.

Disagree completely. Classics should be driven too. Nothing better than a great classic IMO. Although, modifications should be made in order to prevent damage.

Give me an old classic car over the new cr@p any day, much more style.

Additives are a generally a con, they only make you poorer and the garage owner richer.
