Hi MTNDD

My contract with MTNSP had expired on 3 Nov 2006 (and then automatically went onto a month to month contract). I then requested to port ASAP when Porting came into effect on 10 Nov 2006 (however, i think my request was only logged on 14 Nov 2006 on the MNP System.

My question is, will i have to serve 30 days notice before my contract with MTNSP is cancelled and I am successfully ported? Or with Porting, do the cancellation notice periods (of usually 30 days) with the SP's &/or Networks fall away?

MNP: MTN to MTN

Hi guys,

I have an interesting question/requirement for MNP, and since I trust the forum (and MTN DD) more than the retail outlets and call centres, I thought I'd ask it here.

I currently have 2 MTN contracts, one with MTNSP (18 months to go) and one with Autopage (4 months to go). I want to ditch Autopage, but keep my Autopage number. Can I port the Autopage number and use it on my existing MTNSP contract? (Thereby "over-writing" the existing MTNSP number on the SIM...)

OK, that was the easy question. What happens to my Autopage contract if I port before the end of the contract? Can I still use it, albeit with a new number? (I'm going to keep paying till the contract expires - surely I still get to use it...?)

Does anyone know how/if this will work, especially continuing to use the Autopage contract after porting the number?

Thanks

Hi MTNDD,

Looks like my number was ported over this weekend...17th Nov to be exact. So it looks like i didn't have to serve any 30 days notice :)

Just wish they (either new or old SP) could have at least sent me an sms to notify me that the port was complete.

But will have to see my last MTNSP bill to make sure that there were no hidden costs ;)

That's good news

Let me know if there are any hidden costs

Thanks MTNDD

Got successfully ported from Voda -> MTN over the weekend. I paid R135 for the new SIM , (but i believe you pay that anyway on a new contract). That's the only 'additional' cost i paid.

MTN DD, see also this thread, regarding porting a number into an existing contract.

For me the two main questions are:
1) Can you port a number into an existing contract?
2) Can you continue to use the old contract after porting the number out?

If any of the answers are no, can you think of a way around it? E.g. port to prepaid, then move the prepaid number onto the contract.

Hi,

The customer is still required to give 30 days notice as per policy. If the port occurs before then there will be a cancellation fee if we did not receive notification.

Hi,

Currently only MTN pre-paid numbers can be activated (MSISDN Swap) to an existing MTN SP contract number. If the customer wishes to activate an Autopage number, he would have to port it to pre-paid first. There is currently no formal process for these swaps and prior arrangement would have to be made with the Activations department beforehand.

The customer will still be obligated to fulfil his contractual obligations with Autopage and will need to contact them to enquire what processes they have in place with regards to port outs. They may offer him another number, or they may ask him to ay off only his subscription. Each SP has their own policy in place.

Hope this helps.

Thanks MTN DD, I really appreciate your help, not only with my question, but on the forum in general. Please keep up the good work!

This reply I got from the Mobile Number Portability Port Support Team so no problem on answering your question, as for the forum no problem what so ever that's what I'm here for and thanks for the compliment I'm glad you think I'm doing a good work on here

Some "Autopage" info on number portability:

It seems that if you want to port from an Autopage contract, you have to pay-up/cancel your existing contract. It is not possible to continue paying the monthly fee, or continue using the contract (with a new number).

Perhaps I need to investigate doing a MSISDN swap (contract<-->prepaid) with Autopage... and then port my prepaid number to MTNSP and doing the MSISDN swap again. Unfortunately Autopage is quite useless, I wonder whether they will even know what it is, much less be able to do it...

MTN DD, you mentioned that there is no formal process for MSISDN swaps - does this mean it's not guaranteed that they will do it? What is the criteria? How do I contact the activations department to find out?

Hi MTNDD,

Thanks for that. However, I just called MTNSP to find out what the cancellation fee would be and explained my scenario to them. The consultant that I spoke to confirmed with the Retentions department that, with MNP, if my contract expired (already served the full 24 months) then I do not need to give 30 days notice to cancel. I asked the guy to add a note to my profile and give me reference number for the call, which he gladly did :)

Hi,

Currently MTN does not offer a customer to port from MTN contract to MTN pre-paid. You'll need to port to another Network as pre-paid and only after 2 months port to mtn pre-paid and then we could arrange the MSISDN swap.
MTN should finalise the process in the coming months.

Hi MTN DD,

OK, hopefully my last set of questions on MNP...

My strategy for porting my number from an existing Autopage (MTN) contract to an existing MTN SP contract:
  1. Do an MSISDN swap between Autopage contract SIM and prepaid SIM
  2. Port the prepaid number to MTNSP prepaid
  3. Do an MSISDN swap between the prepaid SIM and MTN SP contract SIM
My questions:
  1. Who "owns" the prepaid SIM MSISDNs that you buy at a normal retailer? Should I be able to do an MSISDN swap at Autopage? I think this will be the most difficult step...
  2. Porting from MTN prepaid to MTN prepaid is supported, right?
  3. Do you foresee any problems with the MSISDN swap at MTN SP?

If all else fails, I'll just sacrifice my number. I'm not THAT attached, but it would be nice to keep it.

Thanks
