Mobile broadband battle continues

move along, nothing to see here...

also vote for larger caps / better pricing before speed, currently sitting on plain old 3G (not hsdpa i mean) and it is fairly ok for most things.

plus the higher speed, whatever either company claims ... in my book it remains non-existent until i can buy a Huawei E272 or similar from most any cellular outlet, if they were serious about moving to higher speeds they would have the hardware available for the end-users ... they don't ... so guess what that means ...
 
Why do you need an E272 for the higher speed?

Alot of phones are 3.6mbps capable.. as are alot of the modems already.. the E220 (iirc) is 3.6 capable already.
 
who said anything about 3.6 lol ... i mean 7.2 and especially HSUPA which the E220 does NOT cater for ... hence i would not believe all this future-speak until devices that have been available for what? almost a year now? are in fact readily available here
 
haha sure, and i am "capable" of winning olympic gold in the 100m dash ... unfortunately not all users are content downloading faster and faster while uploading remains a pain in the *you-know-what*

edit: should probably clarify, currently i want a data modem, i know of the E272 and am guessing it is even more imminent than local loop unbundling LOL, so why would i spend R1500-R2000 on the E220 now when i know it won't be the only game in town much longer?

E220's days are numbered and if either cellphone provider was serious about the future right here and right now they would get the newer devices out there, its a no-brainer, its the part of your network "rollout" the consumers pay for so what's the holdup?

Seems like some people will never be happy. I can guarantee you this person will complain even if he had a 40Gbps fibre connection directly into his house all to itself.

maybe i'd start complaining that HDD's are too small then, but the fact remains, if you have an E220 right now, good for you, if you don't, why bother??? i'm not the kinda guy that buys an outgoing model car just before the new one launches

sure you get good deals, but it is guaranteed to be rendered "obsolete" (or at the very least less valuable) in a short time frame
 
Well the E220 still has a good 2 years of life in it given the technologies that are being rolled out and what it is capable of.

You just seem to be complaing for the sake of complaining rather than actually knowing what you are talking about.

Not sure why you're being sarcastic? I merely corrected your perception that the E220 cannot go faster than 3.6.

The E272 will be available shortly (there's a big stock shortage but we managed to get a shipment) and it will be the best option for the future if you want a UPA device.

Also, the E272 is substantially more expensive than the E220 but we're working on that.

one doesn't have to know much to know this: the E220's days are numbered, it is only claimed to be 7.2 capable btw, if you're not "in the know" you will never catch Huawei making that claim, it is known not to be capable of greater upload speeds, the E272 is guaranteed to be capable of BOTH those feats and it is available right now, just not in ZA?

so i am supposed to be satisfied with the status quo just because i have no choice? like we all are satisfied with our super fast first world, dirt cheap internet in south africa? oh, wait, we're not satisfied are we? not by a long shot, and i for one am not satisfied with buying an old modem just because it happens to be the easiest choice for our oh-so-friendly providers

my opinion of course, not complaining for the sake of it, just fed up reading about all these marvelous developments while a basic thing like a newer device goes unchallenged

wasn't meant to be all that sarcastic, sorry, just meant the word "capable" is not quite the same as proven fact, or IBIWISI if you will :)

as for the price, substantially more expensive in the official outlets for sure, will get mine off the good 'ol "black market" thanks, the markup on even the E220 is somewhat ridiculous, but not pointing fingers, its ridiculous wherever you check, except for bidorbuy pretty much ;-)
 
Actually no, I'm just getting tired of people slamming one of the very few companies that is actually trying to do something decent in terms of Internet access in this country.

Do you NEED greater than 384kb/s uploads? I find I upload maybe 10% of what I download, and I think that is the case for most people.

Can you please provide your source that the E220 is not capable of 7.2? Or than Huawei will never make such a claim?

I urgently need to know if I should delete the 7.2 E220 firmware Huawei supplied me. Just now it's malware released by someone else.

I also need to urgently tell Brian (over at MTN) that he's also been lied to when he called Huawei at the myADSL conference the other day and Huawei confirmed the 7.2 capability.

need? probably not, but i don't need a faster computer every year either, would i use the full upload capability? probably not, but someday i just might, and then the one device will happily help me out while the other won't

not a slam on vodacom btw, slamming mtn too in fact, both in short span of time made a big fuss about their "new" speeds while neither bothered to have newer devices in place, but v3g says they are on their way so once that happens this particular point becomes moot :-)

Manufacturers will rather get you to buy the latest product and not eek out another year or two on the current one.....;)

Mine is firmware V11.110.01.03.00 and the connect speed is 3.6Mbps. This is not the actual transfer speed of course.
Huawei website still has it as 3.6Mbps.
Notice a 14 Jan 2008 update on their site, is this it maybe??

Could be, but don't load any firmware we've not tested and released on vodacom.co.za.
