Mobile Connect Lite Usage

This is how i see things...

We have 4 different versions of software, namely:

- Vodafone Mobile Connect

- Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite

- Huawei Mobile Connect

- Huawei Mobile Partner

Vodafone Mobile Connect should be primarily used with the Data Cards. Yes, the E220 works with it, and some of you do use VMC with your USB modems, but i as a 3G Support Specialist wouldnt recommend it.

Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite is the software(scaled down version of VMC) that comes with the E220. Its too unstable and i wouldnt recommend it.

Please give us your esteemed technical reasoning for the above two statements. And please back it up with the extensive empirical data you obviously gathered on the subject.

Both statements are of personal experience and personal opinion. Just trying to help give forumties a better experince :)

I'm not saying they have to follow my advice, but some of them do agree with me, not so? Or am i all alone??? :(

I have never used any versions of VMC-Lite, I have used older versions of VMC, I don't know what the latest versions of VMC and VMC-Lite are like - except for posts from other forumites.

For the E220, I agree with Iam3G's recommendation to use HMP instead of VMC-Lite and instead of HMC, HMP is quite cool.

IIRC there have been posts complaining that VMC[-Lite] has memory leaks, and tends to slow one's PC down after about 15 minutes, I don't know how true this is, but I can say that HMP seems to be very stable and usable, although it might be too soon to say - given some more time I'm sure we can find some bugs in even HMP :D.

@ic, i think you should try VMCLite for a while to see just how BAD it really is...

No, sorry. You as a "3G Support Specialist" (your own words) made a specific statement related to the systems that you're the 'specialist' on.

People read this forum for help and as such will assume that someone who is a "3G Support Specialist" at a Vodashop is posting solid information here in a official capacity.

So, for the rest of us uninformed cretins, please explain your two statements:

1) Why don't you recommend using the full dash with an E220 and
2) what are these 'instability' problems you found with VMLite?

I urgently need to feed your findings back to Vodafone.

I would also be interested in your formal qualifications on your specialist subject matter (Technical IT Data support). I would assume you have strong, formal, technical qualifications (a diploma or two?) plus a fair amount of experience?

Read ic's post.

Just a question, do you use VMCLite? Or have you?

To answer your question about my qualifications, i'm failry qualified. I wouldnt have gotten this job if i wasnt, not so?

This seems like a personal attack towards me. I wouldnt be posting my own personal advice here if it werent accurate. You of all people know about the problems VMCLite has, and if other forumites dont understand me, then can ask me, then i will give them detailed info about my findings.

As for my qualifications, i have a 1year Diploma in Inforamtion Systems: Engineering. Got this at CTI Port Elizabeth. I also have an extensive background in IT growing up, so i may not know everything, but i do know what i am talking about. Do you require my CV also for me to participate in this forum to help other forumites??? Do you need references aswell to confirm that i am not lieing?

To end off, my signature says it all. I'm good at what i do, but that doesnt mean i understand it. Which is also why i joined this forum, so that i can broaden my knowledge.

We're all here to help and learn from each other. However, you placed yourself in a specific position and you should understand the responsibility that comes with that.

You positioned yourself as a "3G Specialist" working in a Vodashop. This is cool but immediately places you here as a person 'in-the-know'. You now cannot make unsubstantiated claims as these will now easily be picked up as official.

You've not answered my request to explain your two previous statements.

1) Why not use the full dash with the E220?

2) What are the instabilities with the Lite version?

By all means, make any statement you wish. As long as you back it up with facts. Then we all would've learned something.

I've been using Lite for a few months now, btw.

This is my Job Description. I didnt make that up myslef. Just a question, do you know the relation between Centerfield Software and Vodacom, and the guys CfS contracted for Vodacom to help out with 3G and Data Queries??

And my claims arent unsubstantiated, the only real mistake i made was NOT documenting what i've experienced with the Software.

Very well, I was instrumental in helping Julian set the orginal structure up.

Then 'substantiate' by all means. But please don't make claims if you can't.

I'm one of Julian's guys for the Western Cape Region. He came to visit me the other day. You also came into the conversation somehow.

I will substaniate my cliams as soon as i can remember all the problems i had experienced with VMCLite. But i dont see the need to as most of the forumites will agree with me on this subject(the ones that have used VMCLite).

Please do. I'd love to send the feedback to Vodafone.

And your advice on not using the E220 with V9?

@v3g, has the VMC bug, where data usage is not recorded under certain circumstances, been fixed in the latest version?

Not according to my tests, although it looks better. Closing the app while connected will still not write that usage period to disk.

I see a similar situation in Mobile Partner, if the app is closed abruptly, the usage counters seem to reset to zero.

Yes, I know.

And your advice on not using the E220 with V9?

Where do i start???

- The Software crashes at times for no apparent reason upon starting up.

- I have seen times where it bombed out with a "Runtime Error 1309" or something

- It slows down the machines i've worked on with it bigtime. I had a customer just today complaining how slow it takes to start up amd wanted me to test if anything was wrong with it.

- It doesnt always initialize the modem properly first time round and greys out the dashboard saying "No Mobile Device Found". Upon going to the "Manage Connections" tab, it shows the device, and the tick to activate it isnt ticked. Tick it, and it says the device is not compatible.

- The Usage meter could do with some work. Like the one on the Full Dashbaord.

- Upon closing down the software, it switched the modem off, which means you can open up the software again, but will not be able to connect as there is no modem. Unplugging and plugging in the modem again does the trick, but does not always work. HMP does however not do this.

- With the above statement, the same goes for when the laptop goes into sleep. The modem doesnt recover form this, and needs to be re-inserted to get it going again. HMP does however somehow re-activate the modem without having to re-insert it.

Cant think of the rest right now. But there are a few more.

Regarding VMC9 and the E220, there are 2 reasons.

1. I wouldnt recommend using VMC9 and the E220 on Windows XP, as the customers i came across with that setup showed signs of instability. I would however recommend it with Widnows Vista, as VMC9 was designed for that OS.

2. Sometimes(i have found) that VMC9 and VMCLite clashes. VMC9 is set to start up with Windows, and most of the time it takes a whille for it to detect the modem. Meanwhile, the customer had installed VMClite aswell, so that one starts up aswell and "grabs" the modem. The customer then tries to connect through VMC, and cant. Vice versa also.

That's as much as i can remember at this moment. What do i these days is when i see these setups, i remove the software, load HMP, and everythig works fine.

I hope this "substantiates" my statements.

1. I haven't had any problems running VMC 9.2.1.6545 on WinXP at all. No crashes or strange things happening.

2. I usually uninstall VMC Lite from the machine before installing VMC 9.2.1. And usually when you insert the USB modem it will want to instal VMC Lite again, which you just click on "Decline".

1. Fair enough. But i have experienced too much problems with this with my customers.

2. Why would you want to click on decline everytime you want to connect to the internet??? That's just uneccesary.

How many times do you click your mouse button a day? What's one more click - LOL.

Oh well...each to their own I suppose. It's like the whole Windows XP and Windows Vista debacle. Choose what best suites you.
