hahahaa, Vodacom,MTN,CellC, etc...
I am sure their cellphone bills will be extremely high :)
If it'll come off Vodacom,MTN,CellC account..

hahaha, but who would use such service.
I for one wont.

wiWallet

The various concerns of security with regards to the wiWallet should be addressed as people tend to have a phobia against any new non-traditional payment method. Once this has been done, i can foresee a massive uptake of this service.

The fact that people are productizing their technical abilities into commodities that leverage the existing infrastructure is something we ought to be proud. Let's face it, systems are changing everyday all over the world.

I've read about this technology being applied in Japan a few years ago. I'm just surprised it took so long to get here. The Japanese case was more a case of storing electronic money in your phone, which then gets "swiped" at the checkout counter (using bluetooth or infrared); money were transfered to the cell phone at an ATM (via bluetooth or infrared or similar tech) or via internet banking (dont know how this worked). See this article.

In this case, one does not use the cell phone network to pay. But I guess the handset manufacturers were not eager for this tech, neither were the MTNs & VCs of this world, as they could not benefit. It looks as if these companies will benefit somewhat from wiWallet and its global competitors.

I am pretty sure my current leather wallet is mobile.

Yeah they can buy stuff with the cell phone, using the camera to recognise the little bar coded squares, or use the phone as you say and swipe it,
usually for small purchases like a subway ticket, or bigger payments like for karaoke with a "joshikosei".

The problem with the Japanese is that they're too honest.
For instance, no-one steals the
signature stamps they use or counterfeits them. Instead of signing they
stamp their name on bills, receipts, documents and those things never
get stolen or abused by someone else.

According to their website, you can advertise by means of an advertisement at the end of a transaction but I think that would be invading privacy as they mention target advertising, by means of age, sex etc.

How is this any better than a plastic card which doesnt require batteries or require you to fiddle with it during payment? I'm not trying to be negative but is this really useful, maybe in the rest of Africa it could be useful where airtime can be used as a currency.

Going Mobile

I think the value here lies in the actual practicality of mobile phones,

I never leave my phone at home but I always seem to forget my wallet.

I take my phone to bed with me, its my alarm clock, I don't ware a watch since I have my phone,

Its my contacts list

My connection to the world

I look forward to the day that all I need in a shop is my phone as long as I can blacklist my wifes phone...:)

Well, I'm not going to use it. Sounds interesting but card swiping sounds alot easier to me. (seeing as you need a card anyway)

Edit: And making me even more dependant on my phone scares me.

Very innovative, but I don't think it will be much of a success. I mean just the idea of getting to a till point and having to log-on to the 'wiWallet' for some kind of authentication - would be time consuming! What if your battery goes flat while trying to shop or you get a call during the authentication process , now u have to drop important calls coz u still shopping, or answer the phone while the queue gets longer and longer? :o Plus there could be compatibility issues; some phones might not even work. Nah...it won't fly.
