Pretoria residents are entitled to demand back their rates payments if refuse is not removed by the municipality, the Freedom Front Plus said on Monday.

"Residents are entitled to demand back their money, after refuse was not removed by the Tshwane metro council for the fifth time this year," said Conrad Beyers, FF Plus councillor in the Tshwane metropolitan council.

He said the municipality was compelled by law to deliver the services for which residents were paying.

"There are more than enough grounds for residents to declare an official dispute with the metro council on a large scale. It should be officially demanded that discounts should be given for services that were not delivered throughout the year," he said.

Beyers said it was important that not only a few individuals were involved, but that there should be co-ordinated action.

"Chairpersons of residents' associations, together with other stakeholders, should get together in January to plan co-ordinated action," he said.

The FF Plus said any further neglect by the ANC-led municipality to make alternative arrangements for waste removal might lead to a disaster in the city.

"While the problem could have been effectively dealt with at a much earlier stage, the fact that the ANC acted as passive spectators of the worsening situation created a serious crisis.

This is the worst city administration in the history of Pretoria," said Beyers.

Fully agree. They either don't collect or they collect late, forcing residents to leave their garbage cans on the sidewalk for a couple of days. Then they come collect on some ridiculous hours like 2 o'clock in the morning. This has happened more than a few times. Why should we pay for service like this?

I took about 14 bags to the dump last week. Will have to take another load soon. :(

ANC local government Epic Fail! Corruption and Incompetence rule the day.

Imagine all the flies breeding...
I don't have to imagine...I see it every passing day.

Well, the later they come, they worse the stench they'll have to put up with when removing the refuse.

But FFS, why is this ALWAYS a problem in Pretoria?

I was actually thinking the other day you should be reimbursed for refuse not being removed because for the life of me i can not understand why our refuse is not removed weekly!!

I am sure that if there was someone who challenged them in court or with a lawyer the would reimburse you.

Yet another case for privatisation. If you have a contract with someone to pick up rubbish and you pay them, if they do not deliver you can take em to court immediately for breach on contract.

Unfortunately with government institutions its not that easy. They can just say, "No money!" despite the fact you pay rates and taxes...

Obviously the right palms have not been greased enough.

Service delivery in area's where people are not paying rates and taxes, that is where the majority of money is going.

It always amazes me when people toitoi because of lack of service delivery but they do not contribute rates and taxes.

So yeah there is no money, but if you do not deliver on a service I pay for I want the option to not pay for it. Or want my money back.
