Ah... well, seeing that she has time on her hands, why not use the few weeks to make a radical move towards a dream/goal?

Hansaworld was written during Maternity leave. The programmer got bored at home and one thing lead to another. Seeing as time is usually the issue during normal working weeks...

He's busy with a few things, T-shirts and somekind of invention thingy :p
Just that there is no real money to throw at it right now. Will see how things go once she starts getting a decent salary again :)

Some invention? Sounds interesting..
Designing something properly on paper or programming something doesn't cost much. But you need time for that. Then, when you have the cash flow again, you'll already have the business plan/project plan/design/etc. , then you can just fund it.

Save. Kids get more expensive. And I only have ine. You have twins...

Also, I must stress the importance of the emergency fund. Mine has pulled my flabby ass out of the fire.

I have 4 kids now :p

We can provide for them fine, and yes saving is a big thing since this is what has kept us afloat for this Materity leave period. But I'll rather struggle day to day than to not have my kids.....

But atleast we're not hitting bottom yet and wife goes back to work in September :)

The thing bugging me most is the sleep I'm losing :D
 
In all honesty I can say that my personal and household finances have taken a turn for the better.

While my wife and I have always had the policy of what mine is yours, historically though she hasn't earned enough to cover anything other than her own expenses (clothing & petrol) and I covered all the other household expenses. Recently she got a substantial increase at work (3 times her previously monthly salary) so she has taken over some of the expenses that I was carrying (food and the maid).

This change also had us look at our total debt and we took out a small bond on the house through which we consolidated all our debt (clothing accounts, credit cards etc.) and gave the house a substantial facelift. Now we are in a situation where we have zero short term debt (No accounts, no credit cards, no vehicle finance) and a bond which will be paid off in another 30 months.
 
been saving since end of last year, I could go on for a year without a payday. The problem I've noticed is that once you start saving you just dont want to spend your money either, I'm finding it very hard to spend money on things that aren't necessarily needed, I currently have all my needs sorted for now.

If you want to buy a laptop and you refer to it as a toy, it must mean you do not really need it.... then you are not really saving, or am I wrong ?
 
On this spoiling part right here...

Do you guys find it more satisfying spoiling yourself or someone else?
I find it way more rewarding spoiling the wife and kids (Even though this hasn't happened in a while :o) I have for some reason spoilt myself a little and feel seriously guilty :(

I bought a Bike, I built myself a new nice PC and all of the small nice things, but neglected the wife and kids a bit. I think it's time I give back a little :D

Good question!

I find it more satisfying spoiling my wife than getting something for myself, this has been to my own detriment at times however, went without a decent home pc for about a year because I couldn't justify spending the cash on myself but I continued spoiling the wife. When I finally did get the PC I actually felt guilty about it...
 
Order of spoiling:
1. Wife
2. Kids
3. Myself

You have to build up to the larger purchases!

Not so much about the bike, but the PC which wasn't even that big an expense :p
