More African languages on SABC

LOL
Then you HAVE to watch SECRETARY on DSTV!
:D

Oh my word, I saw that movie a few days ago and it was D.O.D.G.Y (and somewhat disturbingly arousing...hmmm) - just made me want James Spader more - he can bend me over a desk whenever he wants! (Do posts get censored for crudity?? :D )

Forgot to mention that there is a spin-off from "The Practice" - called Boston Legal. It is set at Alan's new law firm (with William Shatner as "Denny Crane" - rofl, he's also brilliant). Tara stays in it, but Eugene, Elenor and Jimmy are all gone :(

So long live James Spader/Alan Shore (Shaw?)!!

Oprah is awesome! I swear, I'd donate a kidney or something to meet her. Why don't you like Oprah????

Ok I admire her charity work and admit I haven't watched the show in a while but when I did it was either some random weepy wench whose spouse had cheated on her or (even worse) a complete advertising pimpfest i.e. an entire show dedicated to the latest curtains/sheets/books/teddy bears/tongue scraper/bullsh!t... you name it.

Sometimes she does real hard hitting shows exposing inequities within society and the world at large but really most of her shows are just pure inane crap.

You can of course disagree with me... but I'm right :p

I agree that most of the stuff on SABC is a waste of time. But for those who are actually willing to get over their old-era-imbued allergy to African languages (they aren't poisonous and don't cause rashes or anything) and can handle subtitles (most local shows have subtitles), we've actually had some very good local shows on (mostly) SABC 1. Prime among these was Yizo Yizo, an excellent local drama which won (deserved) international awards. Other good stuff, Dumisani Phakati's documentary "Don't f*** with me, I have 51 brothers and sisters" (and good foreign documentaries like Sami Saif's "Family"), "Get Real", Asikhulume, a Xhosa drama whose name escapes me right now, etc.

I actually look forward to more African language programming, there is some really good local stuff being developed here at the moment. (Of course most of it is crap though - Sturgeon's law applies here as with everything else.) But anyone who just knee-jerk changes channel the moment they hear an African language is missing out. I wish we had more locally produced stuff on TV and less of the inane imported drivel (crap like "friends" makes me wanna puke). Growing our local entertainment industry also helps create jobs.

Perdition,

Yeah I know that vomit feeling when the crap American marketingtakes over the Oprah show on some episodes...

But for the most part, her show is briiliant. Who doesn't want to see her giving her entire audience a car? Or some poor working mother a new house? Or making some chick's dream come true by flying her to Switzerland to meet Tina Turner?

I love her serious shows as well - today she had a thing on the war in the DRC. Stories that would chill you to the bone, if you were brave enough to watch. She said that the media in America wont show what is happening in the DRC, so she will (she commissioned a journalist to go there and make a report).

Last week she had Scott Peterson's lover on, that was really interesting if you had followed the Scott Peterson case.

Sometimes people who dont watch Oprah see her as a 'housewives' programme - occasionally this is true, but for the most part its more like real issues and real people. Even when the things being discussed are lighthearted, Oprah still spurts universal truths in every episode.

SABC should be showing an Oprah on SA soon - on the violence and baby rapes in our society. Its going to be a tough one to watch (it was shown last year in the USA, and I keep getting attcked on irc by Americans for this.)

The tickets to her speech in Sandton last week sold out in less than 2 days! 3200 tickets! At R450 a ticket, you know she's gotta be popular. I swear, most women I know want to be her. Actually I've never heard of a woman who doesnt like Oprah.... (Peapod, Candygurl.... comments?)
