More Power Cuts from Eskom

I blame Government when eskom wanted to put up new stations they said no. Now we have to wait to 2012 before another station is operational and thats a maybe.

Do you have a reference for this? I heard that Eskom didn't want to put up any more power stations because the govt had said they would be licensing competitors. I'd love to know the (some more of the) truth behind this.

The story I heard was Eskom was prevented from adding more stations, so as to allow a more "equal" competitor to operate.

Either way, its guavamints fault. Regardless of the issues or politics, had they sorted it out, we would not be in this mess now.
Government has the function to ensure the country works. Otherwise, they are useless.

Clearly the guavamentalists are useless, sadly there is no easy way to get rid of guavamentalists.

Bryanston Wes'side must be on a different schedule - had load shedding this morning again from ~10:35..~12:30, although yesterday's load shedding here was also from ~16:00 to ~18:00 - IIRC more like 18:15 when the power of none returned.

Maybe - but I doubt an Aircon compensates for the extra geyser load, heaters, lights, kettles etc.

And, Eskom themselves have said that summer usage is lower than winter.

An aircon uses barely more electricity than a fridge, even when heating, since it is simply a heat exchanging device. The fans use more power than the compressor.

Dunno about these industrial aircon-types used by companies.

Yea sure, the newer aircons hardly use power! - This i know - but... How many people out there are still using those horrit box looking things that guzzles power - YEA they SUCK power bigtime! - Not everybody has converted to the newer units. I used to have 4 of those old aircons. They were rusting to hell and gone, and my electricity bill often ended up being around R1400 running those 4 aircons flatout during summer. Since i upgraded my aircons, my bill has dropped to R600!

You can get both bayonet and screw-in energy saving globes. I swapped my entire house about four years ago and noticed the difference in my bill. There is an initial expense in the outlay although the price is dropping all the time. You should be able to get an energy saving globe for around R15.00 now (equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent globe).

The othre thing that is great about CFLs is that you don't have to replace them nearly as often as incandescent bulbs. In the 3 years since we replaced most of our lightbulbs with CFLs, I've had to replace just one.

This afternooon when we were at Killarney Mall, My dad's cellphone received a sms from telkom warning that there will be a load shredding till 2:30 pm (later I checked the parking ticket, we arrived at the mall like 2:39........).

And it's not clear which area was affected because obviously I didn't get the same SMS. The timing was off......

We had load shedding in Waterfall Durbs, from 4 to 6, then when they tried to put the power back on, it tripped the exchange and didn't come back on till 2 in teh morning. It's driving me crazy.

Cyberarmy, how do you get sms notifications of load shedding?

Hi all,

We're setting up to offer an SMS notification of shedding, system is live and being tested now. If you'd like us to tell you more when we launch (estimated at 2 weeks time) please drop me a line at [email protected]

thanks,

load_shedding_watcher

hmmm, suspicious looking mail address?
email harvester?

Give it Eskom's e-mail address, especially the one of the webmaster of the loadshedding site

Eskom's power cuts is getting ridiculous! Here in Worcester we get about 3 blackouts a day, each for two hours!

I see that all the generators is sold out as well. If any of you were interested... I got a power box (UPS) last week. At least I can continue my work when power fails. The site's name is http://www.backup-power.co.za
