More Power Cuts from Eskom

Summer is a critical period for Eskom because we do routine maintenance of our plant," said chief executive Jacob Maroga.

as is winter because of added demand.

and in spring, we are just clueless, and we are hard at work for a reason to give when its august.

blah.

(the more observant will have noticed i saved 1nanowatt by not using capital letters)

it would be nice to have an accurate load shedding schedule. Whenever I visit the Eskom website, the information for my area is wrong. What's the point? I understand we are power starved but if we can prepare i.e. we know in advance we're not gonna have power for a few hours it eases the probelm to a degree

I blame Government when eskom wanted to put up new stations they said no. Now we have to wait to 2012 before another station is operational and thats a maybe.

Will Eskom ever get it right? Is there a real viable affordable plan to get SA's power generation back on track? If so, when? Will they ever catch up?

Once again its not all Eskoms fault. They wanted to add a station and Govenment wouldnt give them permission.

When was this, and why did Gov reject such a proposal? Surely Gov is desperate to solve this problem (I hope).

The one item I learned not to buy anymore in this powerless reality is ice cream ... bought too many ice creams that's gone through repeated freeze and defrost cycles.

I still don't get how power usage is calculated. It seems that more electricity is being used in summer than in winter? It doesn't make sense as electricity gobblers like geysers use a lot more power in winter than in summer. I sat at for 2.5 hours at a petrol station waiting for the power to come back just so that I can get enough diesel for a 200km trip back home.

I think the whole load shedding business is a ploy by Eskom to force Government's hand. Seems like Joe Public isn't pissed-off enough...yet.

A big maybe :o

Aircons?

Maybe - but I doubt an Aircon compensates for the extra geyser load, heaters, lights, kettles etc.

And, Eskom themselves have said that summer usage is lower than winter.

Eskom uses the percieved lower usage of summer to do routine and planned maintenance.

But you only have to look around for the number of people who installed aircon at home during the past 2 or 3 years to realise that power consumption did increase quite a lot during summer compared to winter.

In europe, many countries have banned the sale of incandescent globes.

In ZA the guavament has not even mentioned such a power saving step.
Eskon did attempt to alleviate the problem by exchanging energy savers with incandescents - perhaps it's time for them to do it again.

Yeah - they did. However, they failed to take into account the screw in versus bayonet type globes, so when they came around, it was not possible to exchange.
I am keen to swap - if I know they are coming, I will go buy a boxload of the cheaper incandescents, and swop out....

:p

Damn sissies that live here, this is africa, its supposed to be a bit hot...

And to those people building their new mansions and whatnot, maybe built it to be temperature stable you know?

Where are all the financial gurus with their estimates on what this is costing the economy?

PE has had shedding today and some areas Sat. Imagine an whole shopping complex emptying! Walmer, bad news for the restaurants 2 1/2 hours, no power, tills, frier's off, customer refunds. The shop owners should be able to sue Exdom for losses, then we will soon be able to put a price on their uselessness.

It is no use blaming the state alone, exdom could have put their point more ardently! Both are at fault.
