In my opinion, it was Brussouw who made the biggest impact. Once Brussouw came on, our forwards played like forwards should. He led from the front and was unstoppable.

Remarkable that Brussouw only got on the park after Danie Rossouw (replacement) was concussed shortly after getting on!
One wonders if PdV would've sucked it up and even put Brossouw on the field had Danie not gone down?

Scary

Brussouw, Steyn and Fourie had a massive impact when they came on.
Schalk was hardly visible except for his transgressions, Pienaar was well his normal self, weak on defence and Juan De Villiers mediocre.

We never ever looked like we were putting any pressure on and only after Brussouw mined out a few turnovers did things start looking up. Possession stats are evidence enough of that.

I have the utmost respect for the players that were replaced but with the exception of Juan, they really were not contributing much at all.

Well nobody really had a good game before the 60th odd minute, mostly due to pointless mindless kicking.

Hell yes :) Brussouw is doing an awesome job, the way he gets turnovers in is amazing. And the hard work doesn't stop there, he defends like a monster.

I would love for Morne to get a proper chance to show what he can do, he has done an amazing job this year in the Super 14 and based purely on that he should have been starting flyhalf.

Another person I reckon who should be in teh starting lineup is Jacque Fourie. The guy is an awesome player and right now easily better than either de viliers or jacobs.

I think it was more a matter of lack of motivation, you could see the amount of effort went in after Brussouw and Styne came in! The fans got behind them 100% and from then on there was no stopping... and as far as im concerned that is exactly what a impact player like Brussouw is suppose to do.... but in his case we should start him!:D

Difficult one. I like both players. But at the moment Pienaar's kicking is not what it should be and I would vote Steyn.

And I would definately bench Pienaar to cover 9,10 even 15 if needed. Replacing Ruan with Morne was one of the wisest decisions Devvie could have made.:D

That is the perfect role for Pienaar, to cover those positions!! i don't believe that there is a better utility back in SA than Pienaar, unfortunately, he just isn't a specialist fly half!?

On a side note, i think Burger/Smith now has to fight for a position, PDV MUST give brussouw a run in the tri-nations, he deserves it!

Can someone pls explain to my why the best defensive player in the whole world (according to me) Juan de Villiers gets replace when Jacques Fourie comes on?

Juan+Jacques are by far the best center pair in the world. I can't see the reasoning behind it. Except for the obvious race thing.

This has now happened in both tests, I couldn't care less about this Mornè/Ruan crap. (Mornè is the best no10 in SA currently). Seriously, I can't see how Adi is picked over Jacques....

the timing of the thread is gunna make it swing one way

What a great observation - and it is probably important: right now, Steyn has achieved something and he has had a great year. Ruan has done nothing and had a rubbish year. I say we keep Ruan on the bench where he can try and improve his year while we exploit Steyn's fantastic run.

I can see this thing is gonna boil down to B vs S thread....

Well, if the thread was brought up during the last 2 season, i can't see the result being any different, steyn didn't just have 1 good game, he's now been constant for 2 season (if not more), where Pienaar has had a very average 2 seasons.... how long does a player have to prove he is the best? 2 super 14 seasons sound good?

Ruan, missed three kicks? And you want to boot him? Nah...he had a bad game this past week, two week ago he won the test with his boot for us.

Steyn deserves a chance as well, but in my mind Ruan has the jersey.

We have a Tri-nations coming up - the depth can only help.

Ruan to the bench Morne to start.

First test ratings :

Ruan Pienaar
- Another supposed "weak link", Pienaar slotted straight back in to action after an injury layoff and was a nerveless, tactically astute presence all afternoon, with his accurate boot punishing the Lions. 8

Unfortunately a rating was not done for Morne on that site but elsewhere :

Morne Steyn (67 mins for Pienaar): Too late to make real impact.

Second test ratings
:

Ruan Pienaar: Last week he didn't put a foot wrong but this week he struggled to get control of the game as the Lions put him under enormous pressure. He missed two penalties and a conversion and those missed points nearly saw the Lions take the series to a decider. 5

Morne Steyn: Kicked the winning penalty and was coolness personified in a hugely pressured situation. In front of his home fans he stroked over ball as the siren sounded from within his own half to write himself into the annals of Springbok rugby folklore. 8

Only mention of the penalty again...

Lol, funny how sent the line away for two tries with the "B" backline on the field.

Did you not watch the game? He straightened the line, kicked up and unders and he defended like a demon. He also carried the ball up when needed.

He is the man on form. Don't throw Pienaar away but start Morne.

Morne to start. Ruan to cover #9 and #10 on the bench.

Next question?

Speaketh sense, he does.

I've been thining about it. I was backing ruan but i think i will have to switch. Raun should be sent to the bench, and morne should start. I say this because he has earned his spot ahead of ruan based purely on the strength of his form. When Ruan starts getting his mojo (e.g. goal kicking consistency) then he can try unseat morne, but until then morne has done enough over a long time to earn a promotion for the next few tests.

Either way, though, morne and Ruan are our flyhalf's and they should be used as a pair.

We'll see this weekend then. Morne to start according to most rumours.

well, what better time to give the "lesser" fly-half a go? i hope they give him a chance....

(at least this is a good situation for us, we have some people competing for key positions, whereas at one time it was butch james vs andre pretorius)

spies vs kankowski
burger vs brussouw
du preez vs vermaak/pienaar/kockett
steyn vs pienaar

good times for SA Rugby... ;)
