Moto G

Seems android has moved on to 2GB min. My 1gb moto G does the same.

Well my phone isn't "slow" but it definitely isn't as fast as it used to be. Fsck knows why they'd make a mobile OS more power hungry. Makes no sense if that is the case.

On the one hand I am very glad I got the 2GB while the rand dollar was still sort of bearable. On the other it is rather frustrating when your phone is slow and now I have to listen to the moaning of her slow phone. It runs pretty much the same apps as mine (Facebook, Whatsapp, Hangouts, Accuweather) all the usual memory hog suspects - just a lot slower.

I wonder if they will release an optimized update soon seeing as the vast majority of most Moto G users have 1GB RAM.

I read on https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoG/comments/40xvcf/moto_g_2015_us_soooo_slow_after_marshmallow_update/ that cleaning the cache partition might help, so I'll give that a try on our slow 8GB. Also saw they are rolling our update 6.0.1 so hopefully that helps too.

How do I clear Cache Partition on my device?

This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.

With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on.
Press the Volume Down button to highlight "Recovery mode"
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode.
You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe cache partition" and press the Power button to select it.
"Reboot system now" will be highlighted, press the Power button to select it.
Note: Clearing the cache may take up to 5-10 minutes depending on user memory.

Tried that it helps for a while. Another thing that helps is to never close any apps Android 6 does a better job of memory management... Well that's the theory. No task killers etc.

Oh and in settings disable some apps that start at startup that you never use. You'll be surprised the junk that starts and just hangs around.

When you say disable start at startup are you referring to what apps are battery optimized?
No in settings marshmallow has a menu for apps that start at boot. In my case things I never use would start at boot, apps that i've forgotten about so I disabled them from starting at boot and just hanging around. In a normal day I would use whatsapp & chrome and maybe later youtube why should "doggie sounds" start and hang around all day or "bedtime stories" or "cutie cat memes"

Do it, really worth it. Pity it does not show in my wife's 1GB RAM Moto G3 because it is slow as hell.

So my mum sent me a message now saying the Moto G 1st gen I gave her has stopped reading her SIM card. Googling a bit it seems to be a common issue. The pins that contact with the SIM card either lose their contact or can get damaged, but it is quite odd seeing that they never swop SIM cards or the like...

They are busy trying the SIM in another device but the prognosis doesn't look good...

There is something serious k..k with the 1GB RAM Moto G 3rd on 6.0.1 - it is unusably slow. My wife has been using it since the end of last year and ever since Marshmallow landed she has been moaning. Today we swapped phones to see the difference and it is staggering. She can't believe a phone can be as snappy ad my 2GB RAM unit and I basically gave up on the 1GB phone and played with my Lumia 720.

How are the rest of you 1GB Moto G 3rd folks holding out? As soon as the next G or E is available I'm buying it and giving her my 2GB G3. Why on earth did they ever sell a 1GB Moto G 3rd?

I have a Galaxy S2 with 6.0.1 on via Cyanogenmod. It's super smooth. Can't be the 1GB memory, but rather a bad implementation of Marshmallow.

I have no issues on mine. Smooth as silk but then I did what I do with any upgrade be it PC or Phone. Reset and installed aps from fresh.

Was k*k after the Marshmallow update. Did a factory reset a week or two ago (got stuck on 'optimising app 1 of ...' message).

Been much better since then. MUCH better.

I'm very close to doing a factory reset. I think the NSA on onto here. Some time ago when she still had a Galaxy Zoom she would get error message of "failed to open camera" when she was in apps that never even should have opened the camera. The phone has a cover on that has a lens flap which cover the extending lens. So it was very strange behavior.

I'll see if it's any better after a factory reset.

16 GB owners... tell me that this is worthwhile for the missus?
For the love of all that is good - do not buy the 8GB. Especially if it is for you missus. There very little performance difference between the 8GB and 16GB back in the old Lollipop days, now on Marshmallow it is a whole new ball game. The 8GB is toast. Buy the 16GB.

On a side note, when I have time I'll factory reset my wife's 8GB and see if that helps.
