So anyone who has an issue with big pharmaceutical companies is automatically a kook? The issue here is whether developing countries should honour IP on drugs while poor people die not chem trails.

All that we know is that Aaron is upset. There are no details about why. He may very well have good reason to be, or he's being guided by morons and reading too much Alex Jones.

I also cringe when someone uses the phrase "Big Pharma" as if it is "a thing". It really isn't the collective for a group of pharmaceutical companies and a health minister should be referring to them correctly, as opposed to fear-mongering using conspiracy vernacular...
 
Read through the article's summary of the new policy direction and for the most part the stance on weaker IP protections seems like a good idea to me. There are some parts I disagree with though. For example I have a problem with is the governement being allowed to hand over rights to manufacture generics of the drugs to a third party without the patent holding company's approval and with minimal financial compensation to the company.

That policy is basically telling pharmaceutical companies "don't bother to bring innovative new drugs to this country because we will just hand over the secrets to your drugs, that cost you billions to develop, to some third party (likely a politically connected BEE company) for next to nothing".

It's a problem when those drugs are foreign funded though. Some projects won't pay for them.

It doesn't actually matter if the pharma(apologies to the "rationalists") co's don't bring their products here. It's not as if we don't live in a world drowning in information. So, the threat is " don't allow us IP rights in your ****ty little 3rd wold country we won't bring our drugs there and everyone can die for all we care" Big fccking threat! No wonder the developing world likes China so much. People starving or dying from stupid disease? The west will give you aid as long as you buy McDonalds. China is all like "you wrant Macdonrals? We give you flee Macdorals murra frukker. We give you flee Macdorals tirr you puke, murr frukker. We fro in flee frukkin aids cure murr frukker. Don't come to China with the 3rd world problems of starvation and lack of medication. They'll feed you and clothe you and medicate you as much as you want for all the diamonds, oil and unenriched uranium you've got biatch.

Ok. :D Here's the point. IP only has value as far as people are prepared to honour it. "Owners" of IP will play up the property rights angle for all it's worth but at the end of the day intellectual property is only a concept. An idea is copied and propagated as soon as someone else hears that idea. Anything that can be digitised is similarly prone to dissemination. Basically once and idea is out there you'd have to be a retard to not try and copy it. If that idea means the difference between life and death or even just quality of life to someone they'd have to be suicidal or masochistic not to copy it. In fact, once you have the means to copy and idea you would have to hate yourself not to copy it if it meant the difference between suffering without the benefits of said idea or simply copying it and improving your life. The Chinese (please excuse my insensitivity with the attempt at approximation of the Chinese accent for humorous purposes) have quote rationally decided to actively ignore the self-defeating (for the human race) concept of intellectual property.

TL;DR it's just very anti-intellectual to suffer because of the concept of intellectual property. IP protects income streams not property.
