^^, agreed.

The book has a lot more room to explore different challenges on Mars...if they did a direct translation to screen, a mini-series would have been needed. All in all, it's a decent translation but as is generally true, if you're a reader, you'll dig the book more.

It's such a tense ending that either one will spoil it for the other.

I listened to the book and just came back from the movie and imho...

Book 9/10

Movie 7/10

....because I knew what was coming and you notice all the bits that are missed and changed.

Great movie though, really enjoyed it. If I had the choice and could do it again, I'd rather see the movie before reading the book because the book is a different monster and is much deeper and so much more geeky.

Thanks guys! This is exactly what I will do this weekend.

Last week I bought a copy of the Martian book on eBay and I am still waiting for it to arrive. Hence the question on whether I should first read the book or be fine to see the movie.

The Martian 9/10
Best movie I have seen this year. Yes I read the book. It is an excellent film, great visuals, soundtrack and well potrayed.

Only available in 2D in my local cinema.

Spy (2105) 8/10

Fun movie, very entertaining. Took a chance by telling SO it was a good comedy, and it paid off

Still Alice (2014) 7/10

"A linguistics professor and her family find their bonds tested when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease." As to be expected some slow parts to develop but a moving story.
Stirling job by Julianne Moore.

Last Knights (2015) 3.5/10

"A fallen warrior rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master." Just downright boring (and slow)...zzzzz. Total waste of a good cast. Bra from Fear the Walking Dead is in here as well (Travis).

Straight Outta Compton (2015) - 8/10

Probably one of the best movies I've seen this year!

Pleasure bud. Even if you a fan of period set movies this one is just bland; dull; boring. Pity as I dig Clive Owen as an actor.

Just watched 10 minutes of Sink Hole (2013) on tv. OMG what a load of crap. The sink holes that appear looks like someone is drawing it on screen with a koki. The one car that fell into a sink hole, looked like it was drawn by a kid with a crayon. Such poor special effects from a 2013 movie is unbelievable. The acting is pathetic. Eric Roberts has plunged to new depths...lol.

It would be unfair to rate it on 10 minutes, but if I had to it wouldn't get more than 1/10.

2013 "TV Movie". That says it all...

B-Grade. Even IMDB has so little info on it.

The Martian - 8/10. Wife and I quite enjoyed this one. The pace is solid, it doesn't feel like it drags itself down at all. It's faithful to the book, except obviously leaves out a lot of parts. In fact it was better than the book in a lot of ways; the novel felt like it needed to be visualized and Ridley Scott is nothing if not a master visual artist.

The Art of the Steal (2013) 6.5/10

"Crunch Calhoun, a semi-reformed art thief, agrees to get his old gang back together to pull off one last heist." Average (art) heist movie. Kurt Russell in the house.

The Martian - 6/10

Another (slightly above) average sci-fi movie.

On second thought, 6.5.
