moving to OUTsurance - pro's & cons

My best rates have always been through a broker. Used to be with Santam but when I changed brokers they put me with Hollard. Never had issues with either.

With Outsurance, they've always quoted me some ridiculous premium. Mostly because I drive a GTI. At first they told me that my rate is heavily inflated because I was younger than 25 and driving what they consider a sports car (they consider any car with a turbo, a sports car... even if it is diesel... they used to anyway, not sure if they've woken up since then). Then at 25, they told me it is because I was younger than 27 and at 27 because I was younger than 30. I'm now 30 and just not interested in finding out what their new age limit is. This, regardless of the fact that I've never claimed, their quoted premium has always been at LEAST R1000 more than what I'm currently paying. And that is after I tell them it is more than what I'm currently paying and they re-assess... thus their "best" quote.

With regards to hippo (and I don't know if this still applies), but in the past, all the insurance companies they represented are the ones that "cuts out the middle man". Dial direct, Budget and I can't remember the rest, but as far as I know, it is all basically the same company in the back-end (I think A&G). The couple of times I asked them for quotes, they weren't much better than Outsurance.
Miway tried to sell me insurance earlier this year for R1500 more than what I'm currently paying which is actually strange since they are underwritten by Santam (afaik) and I've always had great quotes from them in the past.

I won't even PM you the details....

KayserBaird Insurance Brokers : Tel: (031) 767 8000

They are my brokers, and I insure household and car with them for less than Outsurance quoted me.. and their service has been great when I've claimed.

Kayser Baird finally got back to me & they are almost R400 MORE expensive then Outsurance. Bearing in mind that Outsurance also give their clients an Outbonus.

So for me its a no brainer that Outsurance is by far the best for me currently. I suppose the same types of profiles are scored differently amongst the insurance companies so you have to phone around & find out which one gives the better deal for your current insurance requirement.

I'm actually very surprised.. and it prompted me to do some investigation..

Outsurance gave me a similar ridiculous quote again, but I talked to a different broker and my premiums will be significantly reduced soon...

I will be going from paying about R1400pm for insurance to paying R900.

From my experience people should never be paying over R800pm for a car that's valued at less than R200k.
Insurance is around R400pm max per R100k insured. This is for risky cars and people in their mid to late twenties so people with less risky profiles will pay even less.

I've been with Outsurance for more than 12 years. I challenge them (i.e. their premiums) every year .. i.e. when I have had a claim free-year, and often they will reduce my premiums, or at least void any planned increase. I currently have two homes (one building only, and the other both building & contents) insured through them. I also have two vehicles insured with them (I have in the past had up to 5 vehicles - including 2 x motorbikes, insured via them). I am fortunate that I have not had any claims for the past few years, and as a result I received R4000 back from them in my bank account in December last year .. i.e. a no-claims pay-back bonus that is paid to me each year I do not have a claim. There call centre is efficient, polite, and I like the fact that I can do everything over the phone.

Before Outsurance I used various (e.g. Sanlam / Old Mutual, and 1 or 2 others) and I invariably had problems with them when it came to claiming.

Reading with interest: Just taken out cover with Outsurance and very happy with quote, I'm paying less for my Jeep 4x4 than I was on my Golf ( which I traded in on the Jeep) Will probably have to see their quality of service if I ever make a claim?

I pay R2750 insurance for my Citroen DS5 THP200 sport (R407k value), 2012 DS3 Sportpack (R238k value) and 2003 RunX RSi (R80k or so) including mags, then household and some jewellery. I recently added building cover as well hence it going up to R2750. I have insurance through Alexander Forbes. They also include shortfall cover for vehicles on finance and cover the vehicles for personal and business use.

I'd rate King Price the best though.

I was asking a question in another thread but maybe this one would be more suitable. I was looking on Hippo for insurance estimates between a Honda Accord and Hyundai ix35, both cars prices similarly. But somehow the Honda quoted on almost twice the amount. Can anyone here explain this to me please?

Theft/hijack rating probably has at least something to with the disparity.

Same thing, they quoted me R1650 for my bike (worth R40k). Got cover with MiWay for R167. No jokes! 10% of what OUTripoff wanted to charge me.

Also, I got all my cover with MiWay online, without having to speak to anyone, which is quite amazing!

You somehow messed up here. I am at Outsurance with a R300K+ car and they charge me R560 p/m full cover. Hence my asset is 10x more valueble and insured for 3x cheaper. Sounds fishy...

That's cheap, they quoted me 800+ for a 67k car.

It's humorous when people compare insurance premiums without comparing age and gender.

I think it holds true mostly if you are male between 18-27ish. And let's not beat around the bush, being a guy most of us drove like arsewipes in our younger years. The solution I have for you if you are in that age bracket is to let your dad take out the insurance and put you up as a secondary driver.

Been with Outsurance long enough to get an Outbonus in July. 2 Weeks ago I stop at a pedestrian crossing. Car behind me did not and my car gets written off. 11 days later I am paid out the retail value of my vehicle.

Pros of Outsurance for me was the premium and speed of the claim settlement. Cons is the dude I dealt with. He was not as articulate as I would have expected and would not always answer questions directly. Still waiting for answers promised.

My biggest gripe with them is the approved repair centers. The people on their panel work at rates that people I regard as good panel shops can not. Therefore my preferred panel shop would not even get involved in an Outsurance claim. Yes, Outsurance will pay me out the money to repair the car at my preferred panel shop, but then I have to handle everything myself. They absolve themselves from any responsibility.

Now my car got written off. I have my doubts as to if that was necessary and expect to see the vehicle on the road soon. The damage did not look that bad. I must admit I am not a panelbeater, so there might be things I don't know. As stated before, the damage report is one of the things the claims consultant promised me that I am still waiting for.

All in all, I will insure my next vehicle with Outsurance again. Better the devil you know......

Cars are written off if the cost to repair breaches a certain threshold (I'm assuming 75% of the value). Note that things like airbags etc are really expensive to replace, so they generally push the car into the territory of being "written off". So yes, the chances are that you will see your car on the road again after some panel shop buys it for cheap from Outsurance, and then fixes it up for cost and sells to make a profit. The car will not be classed as Code 3 either I don't think...

After reading this thread i did some investigation...

Santam: www.hellopeter.com/santam who i am currently with :erm:

Outsurance: http://www.hellopeter.com/outsurance mostly good things here and my parents recently claimed from them after an accident and all went ok

I will be looking for a new insurer as i have no faith that Santam will provide good customer service or claim assistance

This is very simple. You will not have a problem with Outsurance until you actually have to claim for the car. Once you claim, they will start investigating you, visiting your neighbours etc to look for a reason not to pay.

There seem to be a few complaints against Santam not paying out. I saw even more complaints against King Price. I think I will stick to my insurance broker/Hollard. I claimed twice last year and premiums stayed the same.
