Moving to VOIP Home use

Hi Guys

So my house has a Telkom Telephone, which is on a closer plan, this incurs cost of line rental, then the closer plan + any calls

So I have been looking at moving over to Skype.

A Skype number costs $60 for the year
If you bundle this with a monthly subscription you will get a 50% discount

Monthly subscription are

100 Mins to Landline and mobile $3.99 PM
400 Mins to Landline and mobile $6.99 PM
Unlimited Calling to Landline and mobile $19.99 PM

I spoke to my dad yesterday and he says he pays around R350 on average per month for Telkom phone.

Our house phone isn't used alot mainly to receive calls, however I may be using it as home office phone in the near future.

Please note I also have a uncapped, unshaped, un-throttled 20 Up/ 20 Down Fibre line From cell C for R899 per month

So Data is not an issue. I converted and if I bought now it would cost this

Number $60
month to month Sub for 12 months $6.99 X 12 = $84

Total = $144 converted to R2000 for the year.

However Telkom is R350pm X 12 = R4200 of which
Line rental is R250 X 12 = R3000

So my point is Moving to Skype saves alot of money on line rental. as its only $60 for the year = R836 for the year.

Ok device, I am looking at the Grandstream 3275 which is a android deskphone its pretty cool. It will run Skype.

So this is what I been looking at, I don't know if there any cheaper alternatives, please all suggestions are welcome.

Been using mweb voip for home and office. Free number and calls to other mweb voip numbers. Rates are not too badly priced. Just plugged a normal phone into Huawei lte router with mweb settings

I use FreshPhone, and it works on any VoIP device, You can even set it up on your mobile as a "softphone".
I use Zoiper on my Iphone 6s and it set itself up by scanning a QR code.

I also ported my home number to them and it works very well.

0.005UKP per minute billing to landlines and mobile numbers, no subscriptions - PAYG.

Voice quality is poor, barely acceptable, no DID number, but you can set caller ID to your mobile. There is no better price.
 
Have to agree with @sajunky. There is no better option tjan discountvoip.co.uk

Super cheap calls and when I say super cheap we talking 7.8c per minute to mobile and landline numbers in SA. Cheaper than that you can not get.

No local number unfortunately but set the caller id to your cellphone number and people will see your number when you call.
 
Don't use Skype or any overseas provider for that matter. Reason being is the latency to their servers is pretty high and there is a delay while talking. Saying this from experience. Go to http://www.nexus.co.za/voip/ sign up for a R25 sip channel and you can use your cell phone as a sip phone or purchase any desktop sip phone. You will obviously pay for usage but it's still much cheaper than Telkom.
 
Had a Skype account for quite a while, and use it very effectively to communicate with my developer in India. Not really used much for Voice, though.... Some video conferencing, but the problem remains the sound quality from a laptop or tablet is not good! I've even tried an external desktop mic system designed for it, but when people are too far away its simply not great

Yip, MWEB offering free local numbers and thus don't need an 087 number. There service has been pretty decent too...

Hi. Please would you be so kind as to share those mweb settings to input into the IP phone's base station web configuration in order to register with my Mweb Talk account? (I have a SIP account/phone number assigned to me, but there are no instructions on how to regsiter)

Am using Yealink W60B
- Server host ?
- Transport ?
- Server Expires ?
- Display name ?
- Register Name ?
- user name ?
- password ?

I cannot get Mweb VOIP details on their site. I prefer to keep my home number. I will switch ISP as the original ISP that my fibre line is on has not got VOIP, and they no longer sell Fritzbox routers which allow for analogue phones to use fibre or Internet lines. I now buy a VOIP phone for home.

I search MWeb for voice call rates to no avail. Seems many other offer VOIP by getting rates is sometimes not possible.

Also, want to get one bill from one place as now I pay Telkom R750pm and MWEB R550 a month. Going to cancel both or stay only with Mweb as I now pay for fibre. Should I just switch my fibre line to mweb and does that include VOIP line?
