MP3 Players

I agree, I love my sonyericsson phone :)

So I know ipod is overpriced....but wholistically, can one say it's possibly the better option? ( nervously said at the risk of getting flamed....)

SE phone over Ipod anyday!!!:D

I agree - if all your phone and MP3 requirements are met by one walkman phone.

Yip and if you using it at the gym you can be on Mxit, make a call, check out the cricket scores and take pics of all the pretty ladies!:p

And there is the very important issue of the iPod being the only future proof music player. When the iTunes Store (Which is by far and away the biggest and best online music store) opens in SA, the iPod will be the only music player that will work with it

:D Yes, all that too.

Convergance is king ... and Apple is hopping on too. The problem often with all-in-one wonders are that they tend to be jack of all trades and masters of none. But SE has done the core stuff well I think. Other problem with convergance is that when the device is lost due to theft or failure all is lost.

iTunes in SA ... ever?

There is that Russian site that makes most devices future proof.

I'm old school - I prefer to steer clear of the all-in-one convergence idea - lose one lose all.

Plus I'd rather not have to sacrifice functionality or features just for the sake of convenience. Take a camera phone - they're not very good - they cant be because of the size constraint.

Using a phone as a mp3 player leads to no battery left for those important calls. Sure carry another battery of two but then you might as well have a separate mp3 player.

Regarding those old Russian sites. It is only a matter of time till they get shut down or forced to change. Could be 2 years, could be 6 months

iTunes Store in SA? SonyBMG will cave in sooner or later and then it will happen.

And then someone alse will take its place. It's always been like that.

Is it SonyBMG - or is it SARS - that's the obstacle?

Convergence works well in some cases. I think phone + MP3 works well enough. A phone camera can be very useful when you need to take a picture when the proper camera is not around. I'll never replace my proper camera with a phone camera - but it's just never around my neck when I need it. I use my 9300i to store all kinds of data - and it works great - but I am always worried of theft and failure. Yes I can back it up regularly - but I don't.

What has SonyBMG got to do with iTunes? There's no iTunes in SA because Apple doesn't think it's worth it. Apple's revenues are not driven by music sales but by hardware sales (i.e. iPods). The SA market is not big enough atm to justify the investment in a music store seems to be their opinion.

Difficult to recommend a MP3 player if we don't know what it is in an MP3 player that you are looking for. Think about the following:

1. Size of device
2. Storage space required.
3. Multimedia capability you are looking for? Avi Mpg etc.
4. Price

For me, the device that met my criteria the best was the Creative Zen Vision:M

I did the proper research before choosing it, and am supremely happy with it, but maybe you are looking for a different sort of player. Be a little more specific, and I'm sure we can point you in the right direction.

SARS? SonyBMG doesn't like the single price point, and in every new region that iTS opens, they try renogotiate

SARS yes. I've read some time back (don't remember the site) that SARS had some issues with the way Apple operates (or wants to operate) iTunes. I 've therefore always assumed this to be the issue. But I can be completely wrong on this.

arf9999 : Apple want to be in as many markets as possible. The problem is that they have to negotiate deals with the record labels each time. And SonyBMG is the sticking factor. They have held up the process consideribly. When the iTS launched in Japan and Aus last year, Apple launched without SonyBMG because the delays were getting that rediculous. They have since joined iirc

Trafeye : I have never heard that. They SonyBMG reason on the other hand I have heard regarding SA. And it is very well documented for every other region Apple has tried to get into

But then why not just ignore SonyBMG and sell everything else? SonyBMG will be the big loser very quickly.

The absence of iTS in SA is a real let-down - making me pay the same than a person alesewhere for a device that can do less.
