MS Office Slow Launch Time

As I’ve demonstrated if you’ve opened it once then it remains fast.

So the store apps would always be fast for the same reason.

I've said this so many times: I restarted the demo laptops in-store and then opened Word for the first time. It opens in 1 second.

No problems my side with Word or Excel.

This seems like an odd setting for a spreadsheet...

How is it that other people here are also reporting slow launch times for Word and Excel?
I can tell you that all my non-Apple apps take >5 seconds to open with many in the 10 to 15 second range.

MetaTrader takes 25 seconds to launch. On Windows it's 1 second.
TradingView takes 20 seconds to launch. On Windows it's 1 second.
BraveBrowser takes 11 seconds to launch. On Windows it's 1 second.

My Windows laptop is less powerful than my Mac.

Are all your apps up to date? I wouldn't be surprised if the Microsoft AutoUpdate app slows things down if it's checking. It's really an ugly bit of software.

How much drive space is available? Same qn for memory?

The only noticeably slow opening app on my M1 Air is Photoshop (±6 seconds) though I'm sure there are probably others. Oddly enough that app is actually slower to close down.

Everything is up to date.
Plenty of space available.
Yours is an M1?
Did you download MS Office from the App Store or the Microsoft website?

Just move back to Windows then if you care so much about app start up times.

This is what Google Search Labs AI said:
"Non-Apple apps might launch slower on macOS due to Apple's security measures, specifically the syspolicyd process which scans apps for the first time, and potentially due to resource constraints or background processes.

1. Security Scans (syspolicyd):

  • When you first launch a non-Apple app, macOS's built-in security feature, syspolicyd, scans the app for malicious code.
  • This scan can take a few seconds, leading to a noticeable delay on the first launch.
  • Subsequent launches will be faster as the app is cached and doesn't require the initial scan. "

It's a similar reason given by DWOL82 here:

But you're not regularly restarting your machine, are you?

I shutdown/restart my machine frequently. It's powered on only when I need it.

But if syspolicyd is the problem, why is there no launch delay on my iPhone 16 Pro Max?

That's wholly unnecessary and might be contributing to your slow load speeds. Especially if you've opted to reopen apps.

Why? It probably uses more electricity to start up again from cold instead of just waking up from sleep mode. Only time I restart mine is when there’s an update. It’s not a Windows machine. Stop using it as such.

2.86 seconds to open word / excel
