i use msn to chat with people all over the world, and i was asked a question by a friend this morning... if, we are sending "naughty" :eek:stuff over the chat room via the "send a file or photo" application... it obviously goes through my servers and then through theirs.. can the files we send be opend if they check at head office? and if so, how do you combat that?:confused:

I doubt they would bother. Its not a default facility on normal networks to monitor that sort of detail. If you want an extra level of security, encrypt the files before sending.
 
I hope so... i also doubt they would, but we just zip the files and password protect them and sms the password instead... kinda secretive hey?
 
Apparently, there are ways of intercepting print jobs like that. ANYTHING going through a print server can be stored & viewed.
Some companies keep their printed info for years even. (Like say for instance you are using the printer at work to print nawty pics for your toilet door at home for example)

MSN is different. They can see how much traffic you send through it but I dont see how they could intercept msn stuff...but you never know of course ;)
 
Anything that goes thru a network can be intercepted.

This is a basic concept revolving around packet sniffing, If I'm on the network, I can see anything that goes thru that network.
 
MSN traffic itself is NOT encrypted or anything like that, and most packet sniffers have the ability to reconstruct MSN traffic.
 
Using a proxy makes it even easier,cached jpg files ftw
 
know of somebody on this forum that had a person connected to his access point and using msn. So he just sniffed packets, and got some msn packets, could see all he was typing. So yea its pretty much easy so read msn packets.
 
What about google talk? No encryption? even on the text side? :eek:

zip passwords are crackable by the force method but not easy if your password is:

Get something like this (proxy/tunneling service):

http://www.your-freedom.net/

You can use it for free, and if you need more time/speed, you need to pay.

You can route all your traffic through that and get it encrypted in some form [https etc] and even hide where it went/came from.

And to make it more interesting, if a company blocks a said website [ youtube.com for example], then you can access it via that as well...because well they [your IT dept] can only see you connecting to the proxy server...what you connect to from there is out of their control ;).

The proxy server I use (Smoothwall) allows one to monitor MSN conversations in real time. So yes, you can be monitored.
 
Should you be working at work rather than engaging in cyber sex and picture swapping?
 
your firewall admin should be shot for allowing msn in the first place.

Yes - all traffic can be monitored. With some proxies you can even look for certain words in the chat and automatically sensor them, stop transfer of files via msn etc etc.
