Hey Everyone,

Hoping i could get some advice. I have recently upgraded to the MTN sky contract with an iphone 13 and want to get 5G enabled. I called the contact center only to be told 5G is only on the 5G contracts, so I put down and checked the MTN webpage which says MTN Sky, 5G and Made for you packages can have 5G. I called back now only to be told that I need a new Sim card, once again I go to uncle google and all the search results show that LTE Sim cards are fine for 5G as 5G is device dependent not Sim.

Is this the case with MTN that I need a new Sim or do I just keep getting through the agents who miss informed or being difficult? has anyone else had any experience enabling 5G on their mobile devices?

Thanks,
Maximus

All lies that.

The normal MTN simcard works on 5G. Even on prepaid 5G works if you have a compatible phone.

iPhone needs carrier update to enable it. Did you check to see if this is done and you have the 5G setting in the network options?

My phone is showing 5G as an option under the Mobile data options. I tried forcing it on but only getting LTE. one of my colleagues had to phone MTN to enable it but he didnt have any problems with the call center.

It also depends on where you are, if you're too far away from a 5G enabled site (they're not all enabled..) then you wont pick up the signal. I have the S21 Ultra and I haven't picked up 5G too many times just yet, it's a work in progress.
