India's top mobile company Bharti Airtel said Wednesday that it and South Africa's flagship cellular MTN Group had decided to end exclusive tie-up talks.

I wonder if this will cause the Rand to plummet again....

When there was more positive news about this deal (about 1-2 weeks back), the Rand strengthened quite a bit...

I'm glad this deal fell through.. It sounded too complicated... and MTN would lose its South African (and African) identity.

Well, hopefully it's now done and over with, so MTN can actually focus on freaking running their business and providing a service. Ever since they've been doing this BEE/Merger/Sell off talks with -various- companies, they've literally stopped running...almost like they anticipate a take-over and therefore went into maintenance mode.

My entire MTN experience has been horrible the last year, network bad, service bad, billing bad, new products bad, expansion bad...bad bad.

I know this deal would have been super good for the shareholders but I'm glad its been squashed.

MTN is a great company and I'm proud of its SA-heritage. We've already lost Vodacom and our SA telecoms industry cant afford another disposal of our national assets.

Unless Bharti want to sell themselves to us, and become part of MTN - I say NO DEAL!

So so true! Couldn't agree with you more

Thanx God,this deal made us suffera lot,MTN ignored us bcause every manager was busy fantasising about the uge incoming cashflow,Barthi made things worse by shouting to everybody that it will retain them for only 5yrs.Happy days are back again for MTN subscribers.

+1 In the long term this would have meant job losses, so actually it's a good thing. And I love how they blame the SA government, India has the restriction that their companies can't be bought out by foreigners but we're the unreasonable ones?

The ZAR has weakened slightly on this news. This appears to be the general sentiment. The recent strength of the ZAR was only partially on the back of the hope of certain investors in this deal. Unless there are other factors at work affecting the ZAR, I think it should hold its strength for a while yet.

Good for imports, bad for exports. We have relied too heavily on exports in the past. I am not sure that it is always the right strategy. Other countries have the ability to export their products at cheaper prices (e.g. India, China.

I am personally a bit relieved about this deal not going through. MTN is a great SA success story (not forgetting that some investment has come from abroad) and I would love to see it forge ahead on its own.

It would be a little limiting to MTN to have gone through with this deal.

It's good news that the deal is off, now MTN can focus on getting on with its own business, stay South African and rather work towards buying out other opportunities rather than being bought.

Agreed. Far too good a company to mix their flavour.

Guys and gals, this is actually bad news for SA. There is a hidden agenda which is way too long to go into now but the fact remains - the SA government is isolating South Africa from the rest of the world - never mind the controlling of the Rand.

How do you create a dictatorship? Easy, disarm population with FCA, check, dominate and control all telecoms (spectrum/interconnect but no LLU for the benefit of the consumer and according to chapter 10 of EC implement a rule that allows you to change the pricing as you see fit), Check, be blatant, power-hungry and show a complete disrespect for the people you are actually supposed to serve by crossing the line just a little bit at a time (eating the elephant slowly concept), Check...and hey, presto..!...you've got yourself a country which you can abuse to your harts content without any opposition...

Rather melodramatic.

I just think the earnings of MTN and the taxes thereon should be staying in South Africa, not going to India. This is not the kind of foreign investment we need. We need investors coming here and building businesses, not coming here to plunder the businesses we have already built.
