MTN Black Friday Discussions

Mine says expiry 11 Nov.What does that mean - is that the start of the last month, or the end of the last month?
That would be the very last day of the contract. If you had a device with it for example and you cancelled a day before (or earlier), there would be a small device claw back fee and maybe a penalty fee as well. But if you cancel on this date there would be no claw back / penalty fees.

Current package that is expiring in Nov:
Mega Gigs XS - R307.20pm (51gb data+200minutes+100 bonus minutes)
New package they offering:
Yello Essential - R279.00 pm x 24 (50gb data+125min)
Kinda lame if you ask me, I think I will hold out until Nov as according to my understanding end Oct bill will still be the same
and only if I don't upgrade before end Nov will all the extras that I was getting be charged for.
I also tried my luck and asked if perhaps they could review the offer and maybe they could increase mins, the consultant said she would ask a Manager and put me on hold and the call just cut.
Will try again maybe tomorrow..

That means that's the last day of the contract, mine also expires on that day.

The billing runs on the 12th for most accounts apparently and that will be when the new non-promo rate is billed.
Mine is currently on R431 and the non promo rate is R1700, I'll be billed R1700 on 12th November.
I was hoping to upgrade to a bridging contract to tide me over to Black Friday, their 3-month R49 10gb data contact but the agent said probably best not to chance it because sometimes MTN won't allow upgrading so soon after a new contract is taken out, even if the new contract is more expensive.

That's not what MTN told me, they said 30 days notice is required to cancel.
I signed up on 24/11/23 so I assume as long as I upgrade before I am safe..
That's not the way it works, the contract may expire before that, I renewed my contract late in November 3yrs ago and it expires on the 12th of November.

There were reports elsewhere on the forum where forumites said if they called to cancel any number of days before the contract end date, they would be penalised. But this unfortunately meant that a 24 month contract became a 25 month contract. Maybe MTN fixed this unfairness since then?

Thanks for the heads up.
I will get on it asap and not wait until BF

I was just phone by MTN Direct regarding an upgrade.

Best offer she had was 50GB anytime data at R199 a month, supposedly the whole bunch is data-sharable. No minutes (but one can of course buy separate minutes). There's no deal code (I asked) but I also didn't ask if it was 24 / 36 months and what the base contract is.

I'll ask again when she phones again.

OK, I ended up taking it, which I now think may have been a mistake.

The actual contract is https://www.mtn.co.za/shop/deals/plan/contract/mobile-internet-platinum-promo/MBB30GBP
Available on 24 or 36 month contracts.

So it isn't really a very special "just for me" contract - it's open to everybody. I probably should have just waited for the black friday specials :(

I did once again ask if all of the data is data-sharable and she said that it is. In that regard, seeing that I have 2 kids with pre-paid MTN sims, it will likely help.

@ebendl if you took the contract over the phone there is a 5 day cooling off period based on the CPA.
AI search:
A cooling-off period allows you to cancel a phone contract without penalty, but the duration varies by location and how you signed up. In South Africa, the Consumer Protection Act provides a 5-day cooling-off period for contracts made through direct marketing, such as over the phone or online,

I'm very tempted to take this (it's still a good deal) but have decided to wait until Nov to make the decision. My current contract expires on 11 Nov, so unfortunately I can't wait for BF.

You can always ask them to reduce the next bill to the black friday amount. They did that for me.
What! How did you go about getting that done?
My current bill is R431 and my contract expires on 11 November and the next billing cycle which starts on the 12 is R1700, which I’d much like to avoid. I want to wait till BF to see what data deals they offer, I’m on the 600Gb deal currently which is my main internet access and the closest currently offered is a measly 250GB for R399.

What!!!

I just got off the phone with them

Had to choose the 250gb of which 70gb is shareable anytime data for R389 x 12 months

Down from the black Friday 400 + 400gb I currently have!!!

I was on this one as well, was hard but had to choose this one as it is the best and didn't want to take the chance to wait till very last

Basically, I was in the exact spot of the contract expiring during November before black friday. So I emailed MTN support and asked them if they an assist as I didnt want a massive bill for one month. I got a call back from some agents who confirmed that they couldnt match the black friday deals at the beginning of the month. So I asked them to phone me back when the deals come out and I took out a BF deal. When the new bill came out, it was massive so I emailed them again and told them that I tried to renew the contract and they couldnt match the deal, so I had to wait till BF and they dropped the bill to match the BF deal.

YMMV

I can't help but wonder if they structured our previous BF deals in such a way that it will expire "just before BF"?

I very much wanted to avoid the increased bill they were SMS-ing me about. 50GB a month for R199 is good, especially if everything can be datashared, but at the same time my SO's BF deal had 500mins which I'm losing now.

Has anyone seen any confirmation that the full 50GB is shareable with DataShare on the current R199 promo?

I'm also wondering if one can get this contract loaded onto an existing pre-paid MTN number. I'd rather not get a new number.

Other than what the lady has confirmed over the phone to me - twice; no, I'm still waiting for my 2 contracts to migrate to it.

I'm sure you can move a prepaid number to contract?

I just took out the 50gb @ R199 x24 month contract in-store. No problem adding it to my existing pre-paid number.

But the store employees were adamant that DataShare now only works to Contract-recipients, regardless if it was Personal or Business contracts. I didn't believe them , as recently updated terms only mentions this limitation for Enterprise/Business contracts + no uproar in this forum, so I took the chance and took out the contract.

They also told me all the data (50GB) would be sharable.

The verdict is in:

(1) only 30GB of the 50GB is sharable. the MTN app shows 20GB is listed as promotional data and can't be shared. :( At least I took this out on my main number rather than a new spare SIM, so I should be able to use a good chunk of the promotional data.
(2) there is no problem setting up the Datashare to Pre-Paid numbers, i've already done it and it's working.

Plan details:
Plan name: Mobile Internet Platinum
Plan expiration: 26 Oct 2027
Rates: Voice R2.15/min SMS R 0.35
Note: rather high voice rates.

I think I have a few days to cancel under CPA, not fully decided yet...
