MTN Black Friday Discussions

I just took out the 50gb @ R199 x24 month contract in-store. No problem adding it to my existing pre-paid number.

But the store employees were adamant that DataShare now only works to Contract-recipients, regardless if it was Personal or Business contracts. I didn't believe them , as recently updated terms only mentions this limitation for Enterprise/Business contracts + no uproar in this forum, so I took the chance and took out the contract.

They also told me all the data (50GB) would be sharable.

The verdict is in:

(1) only 30GB of the 50GB is sharable. the MTN app shows 20GB is listed as promotional data and can't be shared. :( At least I took this out on my main number rather than a new spare SIM, so I should be able to use a good chunk of the promotional data.
(2) there is no problem setting up the Datashare to Pre-Paid numbers, i've already done it and it's working.

Plan details:
Plan name: Mobile Internet Platinum
Plan expiration: 26 Oct 2027
Rates: Voice R2.15/min SMS R 0.35
Note: rather high voice rates.

I think I have a few days to cancel under CPA, not fully decided yet...

Thanks for sharing your findings! 30GB is better than what I had with my previous BF contracts and thus much more data for my kids. I have two kids with phones and two of these contracts, so I can share 30GB from one contract with Kid1 and 30GB from contract2 with Kid2.

At least of they only get 30GB I get to guarantee to always have 20GB for myself.

It's probably only a matter of time before they diable shared data on prepaid numbers.

Seems like they remove the prepaid numbers at regular intervals, then you have limited changes available monthly to update them. Guess it's a workaround to enforce the rule

Are they currently removing prepaid numbers?

Last week all numbers linked to my datashare were removed automatically and I had to add them back.

Today, all of them were delinked again and now it says I've reached the limit on the number of changes I can make. Anyone else with the same issue? I'm not on a business contract

It happened to me once, specifically on 10 September at 13:04. I added my numbers back, and it hasn't happened since... This happened on my just expired 400GB (+200GB promo) contract R349 x 36mo contract.

I have that same contract and it’s never happened to me.
When does your contract expire?

I have this same 400GB contract and it shows on my app that it expires on 11/11 after which the price goes up.
I don't think the BF deals will be out by the 11th. Retentions has offered me 250GB @ R389 with 70GB shareable.

They've cornered us into a position where we are unable to get the BF Retention Deals if these deals are out later than the 11th.

If you don't cancel or upgrade before the 11th the next bill on these contracts is R1700, which I'm assuming is just the base 400GB data and no promo data. I’m hoping some new retentions packages are released in early November.

I am in the same boat, but I am almost certain that I upgraded post the 29th of November. I am therefore going to ask to check my original date of my contract (will go to a formal MTN branch store here in Sandton city to confirm) and therefore my expiry date should not be the 11/11/2025 which seems to be a unilateral date and therefore it should be valid for the full period.

I have managed to locate it , contract was on 29/11 and the first statement the following month also reflects the billing from the 29th, I will therefore challenge them for not honouring my full contract period. The correct billing should follow.

I was also around that time, think very early in December, I asked the guy in retentions why my contract was not running for the full 3yrs and he didn't have an answer.

After signing up for the 50GB x 24 at R199 p.m two days ago, this morning I received this SMS out of the blue:

Y'ello, welcome, and thank you for choosing MTN. You have signed up for the CBU MBB PricePlan Su plan on 29/10/2025. Your monthly plan includes 1GB data and 50min to keep you connected on SA's best network. Save our WhatsApp no 083 123 0011 as MTN Chat, and get access to help with a range of MTN services. T&Cs apply. Dial *135# to opt-out.

I have no idea what this is. Has someone at MTN just added a package to my subscription? I have had multiple experiences with fraud by MTN employees in the past (they operate with impunity, as complaints go systematically unanswered) so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. I'm struggling to understand what kind of plan this is, and also in the MTN App I can't see any additional subscriptions or similar, but ay be too early as i got the SMS 20 mins ago.

This is exactly what happened to me, ended up taking the 250gb deal, just didn't want to chance it Waiting till 11/11 for Black Friday and potentially ending up paying about R1.7k (I think that's what the sub changes to) after the promo period

... but by doing this, we won't qualify for the BF Retention Deals for 2025?
Am i correct?

They are offering a R49pm 10GB 3 month contract but they can't confirm whether MTN will allow you to upgrade again on BF, they probably will and that would be perfect but before I do that I want confirmation of that, in writing ideally.

If not I’ll probably take the R1700 on the chin in the hope I get a good deal on BF but knowing MTN the bf deals could be nothing worth waiting for :cautious:

I just got off the phone with mtn cancelations.
They tell me I'm currently on the 200GB package with the full 200gb being sharable. They don't know anything about data only being sharable with contract numbers. They tell me that my contract already expired and it's currently running month to month at R499. It's the Internet diamand package iirc. They told me I can sign up for another contract at R470 for the same package. I told them I'll think about it. I first want to see what happens with the data sharing before making a decision on whether to renew the contract or not. I'm currently sharing my data with family and friends (not getting paid for it).
