Any way in which one would know if bad reception can be ascribed to the service provier, or to the handset itself?

I have a new Nokia N85 and have terrible reception. Voices on the other side are barely audible, drift in and out or can sometimes not be heard at all.

I had the same problem before, gave the phone in for repairs and it was fine for a while until the problem has now surfaced again.

Try the sim card on another phone is the best way in which to test if the problem is either the mobile or MTN, or go another step and try another network. Networks do have problems with reception time after time.

If it is a reception problem: look in the MTN forum for the reception post. E-mail them and they will get back to you ( some cases they would visit you and see the problem)

It is a general MTN problem. Me and many friends are also having a rough time with crap reception here in EL.

Got the same problem. Using an Imate Kjam, Nokia e66 or samsung J700. all the same. Kuk reception when at home.

I think this is common.
I can hardly use my 3G on ANY device, because I have to stand outside, on one leg, and have a chocnut fudge sundae on my head before I get 3G (here in Durbanville). Going indoors voids any chance of EVER getting 3G, and ive had this on my BB, My Samsungs and a Nokia E71
I blame the networks for taking R500/m of my money for that. :)

Also have an N85 and I think the ear piece is probably sub standard. Audibility is not as sharp and distinct as it was on my N95.

On one occasion I experienced the drifting voice you describe in the OP but not since.

Disconnects and breaking up I think one can safely ascribe to MTN but the audibility and drifting voices I think are handset specific... unfortunately...

Firmware upgrades may remedy this.

When is MTN going to fix the problems with their systems????

I just recently got a MTN Contract as I was told that their service was much better than the other 2 networks. But now it seems that VC is much more stable.
