So the other day I went into a MTN store to query my MTN account - basically, I want to cancel it early - it's going to end soon.

They type in my ID - can't find anything.
They type in the number - they found the contract - it's registered to ESKOM.

Now I'm very concerned - anyone have any contacts at MTN where I can get the information regarding my contract and the cancellation amount? (I think it's about 4 months away from ending)

I had almost the same thing happen to me...they don't know their arse from their elbows.

Been a client for more than 6 years...

I think their data is fucked up.

So... I eventually get told to make contact with MTN Retentions department - I send them a whole slew of e-mails starting on Wednesday the 30th December 2015.
Replies come in quick, first they want to 'save' me as a client, I tell them straight I want to cancel, so I need to know the cancellation amount / settlement amount on said contract.
They don't reply, so I reply back telling them I am still waiting for an answer, MTN's Neo Nkwane replies saying they want to know the device I have so they can arrange the amount.
No reply.
I try via Twitter.
They ask the same questions.
At 00:00 on the 1st Jan 2016 - R4072 is taken off my account - no warning - nothing.
My bill is R342.01 a month - it's a 500MB data bundle in a Sony Xperia tablet and I've gone to a MTN store months ago (Somerset Mall, Timothy) who put my contract on a ... what do you call it - basically, as soon as I hit 500MB, my data is stopped, so I can't go more.
It expires on the 11th April 2016.
How the F does MTN come up with a settlement of R4072!

Can anyone assist please?!?!
With everything that is going on in my life lately, MTN can't take R4072 and think it's okay!!! Geezuz.

On the line with MTN now - I called 0831808

18th November 2015, 2x accounts were taken out under my name in Gauteng, Nicoleway (not sure if spelt correctly)
Numbers are: 0718867946 & 0718867944

I now have to goto the police station to do an affidavit saying that I never did that.
I spoke to Vuledzana Phalandwa from MTN who confirmed fraud activity and must e-mail the affidavit to [email protected]

This is madness!!!

I went directly to the Police station, did a 2 page affidavit and e-mailed it to [email protected] and got the standard reply.

Friends have told me that their company has account managers who can assist me - so if MTN don't help me, I'll go via them so at least, right now, my stress levels have dropped slightly.

Run away from MTN they are just useless and thieves as well.

Identity theft. Thats going to suck because it likely won't be the end of it.

I'd suggest keeping a close eye on your credit record.

I hope you find out who took out those contracts. Someone's got to be paying the monthly contract if it isn't coming off your bank account

It won't stop. I'm sure there will be credit cards, accounts with other cellphone providers and furniture stores opened very fast. Some stores and credit providers don't do lengthy credit checks and verification and just approve a application if they get a good credit score from ITC and have a copy of id and proof of residence.

Let's give an update for you guys;

So after what happened on the 1st January 2016 - I never got a reply from MTN.
Today, MTN replied via Twitter.
Their "High Value Pre Paid Call Centre Agent" Rudzani Mothelo sent told me that I must e-mail him documents.
I e-mailed the documents, he replied saying that I need to have a certified copy of my ID because I just sent a scan (which is correct)
I replied to him explaining that I took the photos of the affiadavid with my Samsung Galaxy S5 in HIGH RESOLUTION because I don't have a scanner - the ID is a scanned copy I had done ages ago.
He replied a few hours later saying as per our discussion, I must have a certified copy of my ID and of the affidavit.
So, ON MY BIRTHDAY! I went running around Cape Town looking for a place to do photocopies and scans - nothing is open, because ITS A SUNDAY! I drove Sea Point and CPT central flat, if the place wasn't closed, they couldn't make copies or do scans so eventually after 2 hours of driving around, wasting my time and petrol I went to Incredible Connection and BOUGHT a scanner.
The SAPS station in town was nice enough to do the copies for me.

I've now scanned the necessary documents (actually, all of them) and will be e-mailing them - now we see how long it takes before I get my reference number from.

I will never again use MTN.

They quick to dish out handsets and contracts to people but when you try and stop stuff (like this FRAUD) then they make YOUR life as miserable as humanly possible - had they dont their work correctly from the start, this wouldn't have happened.

Keep in mind, this all started when all I wanted to do was find out the SETTLEMENT AMOUNT to CANCEL my only (1) contract with MTN because of them because useless anyways - now that I'm having this issue, it shows how even more USELESS they are.

Forget the settlement amount. Its generally round about the total of the amount you'd be paying anyway...except you get zero benefit from whatever minutes/data you would be getting. Bit of a joke really.

Agreed, but my main mission is to remove all debt ASAP or at least, have minimal debt ASAP.
I don't use this contract anymore... the Tablet is basically connected to WIFI 24x7

Good day

Please be advised that your query has been lodged with Fraud ref no #<removed> will update with feedback.

Kind Regards,

Rudzani Mothelo
High Value Pre Paid Call Centre Agent

Let's see how the reply with feedback goes... I'm not holding my breath.

So if I pay R100 a month, and have 4 months left. The settlement would be R400 ? No discount or penalties ?

MTN is such a F'ing joke... I'm getting angrier and angrier...

I call 0831808 again, I ask them for the number for the Fraud department.

They give me 0831237867.

I call them, push 1 for english, then there is a option for contract or prepaid.
I push EITHER, they tell me to dial 173 or 137 followed by GOOD BYE.

I call 0831237867 again, and eventually a lady picks up... she tells me she doesn't have the correct number for MTN Fraud, they are the HOTLINE - I must call 0831808 again and ask them for the correct number.

What a bunch of idjits.
I was planning to also cancel my contract early, but after the mess you're going through, I think I'll just stick it out for the next couple of months.

Just keep in mind, I'm not even dealing with the cancelling of the contract anymore... That was the reason for the original start of this post - but now I'm not even worried about it, now I have to deal with something completely different.

After calling multiple MTN stores today, no one can help me to get hold of the Fraud department, even the Facebook group for MTN - they contacted me via the group, told me to message them, I did, they didn't bother to reply after that.

So this morning I got no replies from MTN (as per usual via Facebook and Twitter)

I (upon advice) went to the MTN store outside Century City by the Shell Garage - the lady at counter 2, clearly not interested in assisting me at least said a few things that made me even more angry - when a contract is taken out or added - the primary number is supposed to get a SMS (or in my case, SMS's) / notification (s) that it's been done - which clearly it didn't come because I use the tablet DAILY and the only SMS's I get are spam SMS's.

Suffice to say, they couldn't even assist me with a direct number to MTN Fraud department or give me any other assistance.

Anyways, frustrated, I left there and went to Heron Crescent Regional Office of MTN - I was ready for useless'ness there BUT!

I spoke to a Bandile Nkabinde and he took all my details and has started the process of getting things sorted.
I'm feeling very positive now that Bandile Nkabinde has started things - 5 minutes after I left the Regional Office - Twitter replied to me saying that my case is receiving priority - he then sent me another e-mail saying:

Y’ello Mr. Sales

Thank you very much for visiting our offices today. As per our parting conversation, this mail serves to confirm the e-mail I have sent to Rudzhani Mothelo and others in aid of resolving your fraud query speedily. I would like to take this opportunity to convey our sincerest apologies as MTN SA for any inconvenience this matter has caused you thus far. Should you have any further clarification necessary regarding the above please feel free to either email me or contact me directly on <number removed>.

Your patience thus far regarding the above is greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Bandile Nkabinde

*Feeling very positive now!*

It's sad that one has to go to these lengths in the NEW YEAR to get an issue resolved.
