MTN Data Technical Thread

Express card

Good day,

I'll advise on ths ASAP

MTNDD

Hi, any news on this issue? My mom recently got a PCMCIA data card and yesterday she bought a new laptop which only has an express slot. It seems decent laptops with PCMCIA slots are hard to come by these days. Has MTN cought up with new technology yet? And if so, will she be able to swap the card? She's only had it for a couple of weeks on her contract. Please advise :)

Thanks for the reply, saves me from having to deal with the MTN call centre who can't tell me what SMTP server to use..

Hmm one more question, who do I contact to swap the PCMCIA card for the modem? She got the card on Wednesday from MTN in George, not a service provider. Need to swap it here in Joburg or Pretoria.

MTN do not swap devices. If she wants the E220 USB modem then they will have to purchase one

Not satisfied with your answer - what you're telling me is that we have to pay up because the hardware provided by MTN is obsolete.

Good day,

You'll have to speak to the people you got the card from as they ultimately need make a decision but the policy for SP's are as follows

They will only swap out the device within 7 working days and I think MTNSP has extended it to 14 day's if it's longer than that they will not swap the device. It's got nothing to do with the network

Speak to your SP and see if they can make a plan for you

In my mind, it is also unreasonable to ask to swop out devices, simply because you didn't think about what you were purchasing.
Ask the right questions beforehand and you will get the right answers. Education and knowledge can help you ask the right questions.

It's like buying a car and then wanting to give it back when you are not happy with it.

CardBus is hardly obsolete, Sony-Ericsson recently announced a new HSDPA card to be released in October that is still in the CardBus format (See this for more details).
There are very few applications that require more than the 1000Mbps that CardBus provides. I still maintain that some of the laptop manufacturers have jumped the gun by dropping the CardBus slot before ExpressCards became popular.
The better laptops come with both slots. Have you explored the option of exchanging your laptop?

Exchanging her laptop is not an option - all of the new HP's in her price range come with the express slot only. Thanks for the suggestion though.

EDIT: I actually could not find any HP's on their website that have a slot for a PCMCIA card.

Most performance notebooks these days only come with PCIx slots, like mine :p :D
Depends what your definition of "performance" is...
Now this is what I consider a performance notebook.
From the specifications:
Expansion Slots
Multimedia Card Reader : Supports optional Memory Stick® and Memory Stick DUO™ media5 with MagicGate® functionality and Secure Digital Media (SD), One PCMCIA - Type II/Type I card slot with CardBus support, One ExpressCard™ /54 Slot

Nice... I note that it has PCMCIA as well. :) I like the full-size keyboard feature, the Sony VGN-AR190G has a lot of wasted space on either side of the keyboard because the screen is so wide, they could easily have fitted in a full size keyboard.

Thanks - I think it's Wicked

This is definitely not a performance notebook. No gamer / power user / 3d designer / workstation user will call this a performance notebook.
Sony FTL
Now, this MTNDD, is more up my alley. Unfortunately, I could not get it into the country, and the ones that offered to bring it in, added 15K to the price tag, for various costs. Same goes for the Dell XPS M1710.

I ended up getting this
fully loaded. :D

You going to struggle to get a dual gfx SLI-enabled PCIx notebook :D
