MTN Data Technical Thread

Last Friday, on connecting my N95, product code 0546858, a pop-up announced that the firmware version 20.0.015 was (finally) available for my phone.

Using Nokia Software Updater to attempt to download the 114MB file is unsuccessful ... bombs out continually.

I recall I had the same issue when upgrading from the OEM version 11.x.xxx to 12.x.xxx and resolved this by downloading the new firmware direct from the web, to PC, and then installing to phone.

But I've forgotten where I downloaded the new version from. I've Googled but no luck.

Anyone know where the latest 20.0.015 firmware version can be downloaded from without having to use Nokia Software Updater?

We have K800i with 3g MTN sim. Using it as a modem for connecting to the internet. Using Skype to speak to friends in the UK, want to also connect webcam, but we are not getting any good connection speed. The phone is connected to our laptop via USB cable to a USB 2.0. We dial *99# when dialling up to the MTN Data service. What are we doing wrong?

In terms of the current regulatory regime in South Africa, please note that these tariffs and the MTN GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE or 3G technologies may not be used to transfer or generate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic. Should it be found that VoIP traffic was carried over the MTN network using these tariffs or technologies, MTN reserves the right to cancel the agreement that you have with MTN, with immediate effect. You will also be charged retrospectively at R21.93 per Megabyte (VAT excluded) for any VoIP traffic transferred by such means.

skype could cost you an arm and a leg

Except thats not correct, the current regulatory regime in SA, does support and allow VOIP since 2006 or so, or was it earlier. So in actual fact MTN are incorrect here.

Hey there!

I connect my pc at home to the internet via mtn using my k800i as a modem, which works fine normally. But lately I've been having a problem viewing websites. The connection I've created connects to MTN fine, but neither Internet Explorer, or Firefox will display any site, even though they are both configured to use the active connection. Is this because MTN has been having technical problems, or is there perhaps another reason? Any help please?

Thanks!
okay lets start by making a connection on your phone
main menu
settings
connectivity
data comm or communication
data accounts
new account
ps data
name : modem
APN: internet
skip username and password
press save

modem will then be a data account on your phone
press more on modem
look for external id
in my case it's 6 yours might be different
remember the external id you'll be using it in the dial up number

on pc
i take it you using xp you can correct me if i'm wrong... mac is totally different:P

start
control panel
phone and modem options
modems tab
look for the sony -- data modem
right click
on the drop down menu click on properties
in properties go to the advanced tab
you'll have a space there to put in an extra initialization string/command
the command is as follows: at+cgdcont=1,,"internet"
press ok on properties
and ok again on phone and modem options

back in the control panel
go to network connections
click on create a new connection
click next
connect to the internet
click next
set up the connection manually
click next
connect using a dial up modem
click next
choose only the sony -- data modem
click nect
isp name
sony usb connection or bob, up to you really
phone number
this is where the external id is important
mine was 6 remember so replace the 6 with your external id number
*99***6#
click next
no username or password
click next
add a shortcut for this connection to my desktop tick that box
click finish
the dial up box should pop up
click dial
check to see if the pages display
it should in theory:P

Hi

I need to acquire a data card that supports CSD fax. In essence I need to able to fax to a PSTN / Telkom fax machine using software such as WinFax from my laptop.

Could anyone indicate whether the FastLink E620 supports this?

I've tried a couple of cards that supposedly support fax class 1 (AT+FCLASS=1) but couldn't get them to dispatch faxes successfully. No problem with my SIM or the network as it works from both my Siemens TC35 terminal and an old Samsung E800 (both obviously supporting CSD fax).

Any recommendations welcome please.

Thanks in advance
try the sierrawireless modem 775 not sure if they still make them ~shrugs~

In fact it was earlier, specifically 2005-02-01 when Poison Ivy's decree that VoIP would be deregulated, came into effect.

@Skeptik, I don't see a problem here, thread revival or not, usc's posts have merrit, you're complaining that a fellow forumite is posting constructively.

I am reading all this great information about MTN but it says nothing about how fast your gigs dissappear. I am totally confused because I do exactly the same things on my pc every month but my charges jump from R2100 to R8100. In 6 days I have hardly been online, never downloaded anything and my emails are small. Somehow I reached my 2 gigs limit. Ask why and I am told, thats what you downloaded. I have stopped all my updates i.g virus protection and windows updates. Told people not to send me big emails and all I have done is use webpages. Try to see a manager and you hit a brick wall. Try to get information or an explanation from 808 and you get, look at your itemised billing. I tried to find out what I am doing wrong but no help is forthcoming.

I have been on Telkom for about 8 years and vodacom for two months and I have never reached my limit over 4 gigs. How on earth am I reaching 2 gigs in 6 days? How on earth did I reach R8100 in one month?

On top of all this, the pins of my modem broke. I have two modems and two contracts to cover my usage. I have to pull out the connection in order to start up my pc. I am very gentle with my modems and the older one is still fine. The new one broke after two months so I took it in to be repaired. The answer was I broke it so I must pay for a new one.

The customer service is a joke. The speed of the usage is scary. The ability to see a manager is 100% zero. There is just no help and no explanation. Just pay is the motto.

I asked if I can break my contract and how much I would have to pay. The answer was, I must pay a fine of R1750 and the balance of the two years subscription. This confuses me even more. Why must I pay a fine and two years subscription? Surely it should be just the fine if I am breaking the contract. It makes no sense to me.

I am hoping to see a manager today. Hold thumbs I get that right. Where do I go from here? What do I do to find out what is wrong? Surely there must be someone out there who can assist me?

Vodacom E272 on MTN data

I have up to now used an MTN E620 datacard on drivers/software from MTN's Vista E220/E270/E620 download link.

All i had to do to get the E272 working on the MTN dash was to go to settings/network and makes some entries in "connection type" and its connecting up fine.

I never reinstalled or did anything but unplug my E620,plug in the E272 & change the dash settings.
Is this way ok or am i limiting myself re the 7.2 Mbps support and should have something differant installed?.

i don't think you limiting your connection speed at all.

"my daddy use to work in maintenance, he said if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

my meaning is that if you try and work around and get the "7.2mbps" reflecting it may cause the e620 to stop working all together.

That is fine, the Huawei devices all seem to use the same drivers.

ok. So I've just through this whole thread hoping to find the reason as to why mtn only allow you load one data bundle a month, but alas. I found no answers.

So mtndd why do mtn only allow you to load one data bundle a month when even vodacom allow you to load multiple data bundles?

+1
I just found out the same thing to my dismay today. They told me i must wait till the next month for my next 10MB bundle if i use it up.

And MTN_DD, why the big jump from 10MB bundles to 100MB!! And i see the pricing has not dropped at all for the 10MB bundle in 2 years, and only by R20 for the 100MB bundle.

[Edit]and to top it off, the 10MB bundle I added yesterday will be pro-rated for the remainder of the month, as 3 days of my billing cycle had already passed by when I added it. So I only get about 9MB (10MB * 28 / 31) of data for this billing cycle.

cancelling prepaid data bundle subscription

I experimented with the USSD codes and activated a 10MB data bundle. This works fine for occasional use, but now that I want to cancel, the USSD code does not work (*141*6*0#) and the 555 service does not work either - on confirmation it says failed, retry later. I have retried, countless times. Calling the helpdesk did not help either: they said they could not de-activate the subscription for me! Any suggestion?

I have the MTN E220 modem. I used to be able, through the MTN dashboard, to tell how much data i have left in my data bundle. All i see now is how much airtime i have left on my sim card and not how much data i have.

Not sure if anyone else is having the same problem.

My contract for my E620 card expired last year. I have used an MTN prepaid SIM since then at R2/MB as a backup, as my use varies from month to month. But I'm going back* to a Virgin SIM (I only get GPRS where I use it most) because of the ridiculous "no roll-over, no multiple data bundle" policy at MTN.

Someone said that the R180 data bundle actually does roll over - can anyone confirm this before I leaaave! :)

* tested VM data years ago, but my daughter stole the SIM for her phone :o
