Hi Everyone

I have taken the MTN 1TB Fixed LTE Deal a few months back, it came with a ZTE Mf286r router. The internet constantly gets cut off almost every 2-4 hours and the only way to get it up and running again is to restart the router. I have called MTN on numerous occasions where APN was set and router was reset, even the line was reset but the problem continued. I think that the router might be faulty but MTN says that they will send the router to Midrand (I'm from Durban) to be checked/repaired and I need to use the internet for my work so I decided to purchase a Huawei B535 router. I did see that this is an approved device. So now I inserted my Sim into the new router and there is no internet at all so I called MTN and they say that the LTE was barred so a request was put in to remove the barring. The MTN consultant told me that I have to purchase the modem directly from MTN for it to work because the modems IMEI number is locked to the tower, surely they are able to update this? as I did purchase an approved device. I am not sure what to do now and I am offline at the moment.

My MTN connection doesn't fully cut out, but I've been noticing a deterioration in it the last month or so, as detailed up & down in this thread :

I'm sure you shouldn't be forced to use a router supplied by them, because for example, my MTN SIM supplied by Afrihost was provisioned in my Huawei B525 - 65a router supplied by Afrihost, in which I was using a Telkom SIM in it before the MTN one.

Think you need to take you router, the MTN SIM, and your contract to the nearest MTN Regional office and complain about how the call centre's messing you around.

Good luck.

I'm using the ZTE MF286C that i bought from Afrihost, but i cancelled afrihost-mtn and got a cheaper deal with MTN.

The mtn dealer, including the Afrihost employee told the ZTE Mf286c works with MTN. But since I've been using the MTN made for home SIM, they cut my internet off every 2-4 hours as well. I get this message from MTN

"your current device doesn't match allowed devices for mtn made for home. your service is unavailable. tandc's"

So i tried my neighbor's Huawei B525 router and it worked perfectly fine. So now i must get a Huawei b525 router, but until then i will phone them everytime i get barred from their service to get connected.

Hi ishkaar.
It's a year later but I am having the identical problem with MTN. After 6 weeks they have booked my router in for testing. I can't use it as it keeps disconnecting.
Can you tell me what happened in your case eventually.
I am getting extreme opposition and reluctance from MTN to assist. They just don't want to help. Mine is exactly the same router Make and Model as yours.
Thanks for your help.

Good day,

I have been having the same problem too. Long story short, I managed to fix it by purchasing a new router off of takealot. I purchased the Huawei B612 (MTN Bundled) router and as a result the router came with all APN settings preinstalled and this enabled me to just insert my sim and start using the internet for downloading on my PC to my Xbox, without any interruption.

I could not stand the run around MTN was giving me, with regards to booking the ZTE router and claiming its warranty, so I just took matters into my own hands and purchased a new router.

The ZTE router is just one sad story.

Hi @KoketsoL. Many thanks for your comment. Most helpful to know what someone else has done.

Dof question but:
Did you configure the new router with the correct APN settings before putting in the sim card?
I am using my afrihost router with my MTN sim card without issue, but you do need to configure the correct APN.
